My AC/fan blower makes a loud noise

Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum.

My 2003 tacoma has over 160,000 miles and it has been running very well. My truck has been more or less parked for the last 5 months while I was away abroad. When I came back, the truck started just fine and everything works very well, except for the AC fan blower. It barely blows air on low/medium and makes a loud noise when I turn it up to high, as if something is stuck there.

If I am not mistaken, 2003 tacoma does not have a cabin air filter. I read a very informative post about AC blower motor repair/fix (this man's vehicle is 07). I can take a look at the motor and if it is the matter of cleaning, that would be fairly simple. But what else should I look for/at?

 

Maybe the mouse is hungry.

 

Not enough info really as far as description, but it sounds like the blower motor is not up to full speed, relay maybe? Don't know if it has a resistor set up like the older model trucks did, not matter what maker it was.
Now if the noise is different like a rubbing, then I'd check the evap box and see if a bag or leaves have gotten into the fan and holding it back or making the rubbing noise.

 

There are 4 real possibilities. The dash switch (not likely), the resistor, the relay, and the blower. Mine was having problems about 10k miles ago. The resistor/relay looked "fine" to me so I gambled on the blower and all was right with the world. It's easy, 3 screws from the bottom behind the glove box. With the blower out you can scope out the resistor and relay.

I had a mouse get stuck in the blower fan once. It can happen. If the hvac controls are left on fresh air, critters can get in. Mine made a thumping sound with the mouse.

You access the blower fan/motor from the passenger side under the dash. It's not hard to get to, remove the bolts (I think they are tiny hex head screws) holding it in place and it will drop right out. If there is something inside you'll see it right away.

If the noise is squealing, it's prolly bad bushings in the motor.

 

check the wire at the fan, if you have 12v on high speed then the fan is bad (on slower speeds it gets less then 12v), if not run a wire to the battery and connect it to the fan to confirm it works fine, it may work but still have bad bearings that skweal or it may not be turning full speed and be overheating and stopping on you so you may have a problem with the fan and the switch so check both.

if you don't have 12v with the fan on high then make sure it has 12v going to the switch, if it does the switch is bad, if not then run a new power wire from the fuse box to the fan switch or try to trace the wire and find and fix the bad section.

in most cases it is the fan that goes bad, its very rare I see the switch or wiring be the problem.

 

Mine made noises. Changed the blower it's so quiet I can't even hear it.

 

Anyone got a part # for the blower or I guess whatever you need to replace the whole thing, need to get mine fixed before it starts getting hot
