Whistling Noise in Crosswinds At Highway Speed

sounds like its not the window but the actual door seals.

 

So I drove 3600km across canada at up to 150kph no more noise after 4 years it was the windshield trim/moulding. I paid out if pocket for it because I was starting to hate my truck.cost me $275 with parts.

 

I had the same windshield noise on my 2013 TRD Double Cab. Dealer reinstalled windshield with new kit. It helped but did not completely solve the problem. I still get the whistling noise, although not as loud, with cross winds and driving at highway speeds.

I plan to bring this up again at my next servicing which will be at 20k sometime in the late fall 2014.

 

Just had my windshield removed and re-installed at the Toyota body shop so they could replace the headliner. First day since I got this 14 DC back and now I have a whistling whine which seems to come from the top of the windshield at highway speed. This is different than the noise I had in high crosswind. I can feel the vibration at the top of the windshield and it wasn't there before. Hauling it back to them today. Jeez!

 

I had a noise similar to that with highway speeds and a crosswind. Turns out it was just how the wind was hitting the grooves of the antenna.

Which reminds me, I need to get a stubby.

 

I strongly suggest anyone with this sound get the new windshield moulding/trim installed while your on warranty windshield re-sealing doesn't do anything until they change the moulding.

 

I used an air nozzle and discovered the air noise is the window. exact same noise as kamdag. mine is on passenger side. couldn't get it to repeat on driver side.
but over and over again on passenger side. the difference I see is the driver side seal
has a raised area all the way up the channel towards the outside of the truck.
the pass. side it is flat all the way up. either not right seal or shifted or something.
my suggestion if dealer said repaired but noise is there take it back and have them use an air nozzle. then have them repair it. mine is under the extended warr. now that i know what is causeing the noise. I don't if they will repair it. then I will have to find another solution. ( the seal deforms under air pressure) I might epoxy a rubber strip on to block and strengthen seal.

 

I have the same sound and it does sound like it is coming from about the mirror height of my driver door going down the road at 83 with a little crosswind. I had time to mess with it while I was driving and what I noticed was if I just barely hit the window down button it goes away immediately. When I say down barely the window is not even cracked open but still in the upper groove. Probably less than a mm down action with no wind felt then as soon as I snug up the window it would start again. I did this over and over as a test and every time the sound would go away when just bumped down and would come back when window was snugged up. I don't know what to do about it or what would cause that so if anyone has an idea I am listening? I will probably ask dealer but it sounds like I won't get far. I will look at all the door seals but I don't know how that would relate to the window snugged or not.

 

I wonder if "in channel" window deflectors would solve the problem?

 

Yes, maybe but I never planned to put those on. On another note it does look like weathertech has made some really nice low profile "in channel" ones now. I will keep it in mind. Thanks

I also watched a video on some forester Subaru which I guess they have had a lot of wind noise issues with the door seals (mainly around what the guy in video called the gusset which may be issue) and I have an appointment with dealer. I am guessing I will have to solve the problem on my own since dealer already acted like they never heard of the issue. I told him that is funny since it posted all over the internet even with videos of the noise.

 

My dealer says they can not duplicate this noise. Wtf.

 

What can I tell them so they can fix it. I told them driving on interstate when wind blows. They tried taping stuff up but it wouldn't do it. I told them its only when wind blows it seems and today isn't windy. But they wouldn't listen.

 

I took my 2015 TRD Sport AC in today and the technician couldn't hear the noise during his test drive. The service adviser asked if I could drive the technician to replicate the condition. I drove him at 70+ MPH and the technician heard the whistling noise. He couldn't identify the source, but said that I would need to leave the truck for "days" so they can confer with Toyota for any prescribed solution.

They told me that there are not TSBs for 2015 Tacoma's related to whistling noises heard in the cab. I mentioned the 2 previous TSB's and they acknowledged they were for earlier models.

I'm now going to wait until they have a loaner vehicle for me so I can leave my truck for diagnostic. It may be a while as the dealer only has 4 loaners.

On the way back I went up to 85 and nothing. I will go again when we have some storms or wind so they can hang on to it for a few hours.

I'm gonna try a compressor and see if incan replicate.

 

I had this happen once on a longer trip with pretty wicked side winds. I have a video on my phone for evidence if I pursue a fix with the dealer. I was convinced it was the air vent and maybe the blower motor was going. The only way I could get it to stop was to turn the fan off or open the vent to allow outside air in instead of recirculating. It was a hot day and I had to decide between no AC or no noise. I went without AC as long as I could and then listened to tbe noise until it cooled the cab down again. It has to be windshield or door seal related. I could start and stop it by opening and closing the outside vent.

 

I told them there is a YouTube video showing it but they didn't listen. They have to see it first hand I guess. Then tape stuff up to see if it goes away. Blah blah blah.

 

Took it in to dealer today for a scheduled appointment. No crosswind and couldn't make it do it they said. No TSB's yet either so no fix from them. Got my seat belt dinger adjusted so it wasn't worthless. I will probably try some door seal tweeks when we have a cross wind day that I can make it happen over and over while I make changes. Let you know what I find then.....

 

Depending on the direction of the crosswind, the whistling happens on
both driver and passenger front window. It happens ALL the time.
By inserting a business card holder in between the door jam seal and the
door will eliminate almost everytime on the driverside. It is hit and miss
on the passanger side. Annoys the hell out of my wife. Me not so much.

 

Posting here to subscribe, mainly. I have this issue as well, mainly on the passenger side. Sounds exactly like the other video posted and it's annoying as hell. Pressing against the passenger door glass from the inside makes it go away, and sometimes it goes away by cracking the window as described above. Definitely makes me think it's something in the window trim. I don't see any obvious gaps though, and the dealership hasn't been able to reproduce it. I'll upload my own video soon.
