I ordered a set of 17x9 inch wheels for my 2013 TRD Sport. I ordered them from Discount Tire and they salesman said that on Toyotas you might get vibrations with aftermarket wheels. He said that Toyota uses the hub to center the wheel and not the lug nuts like other manufacturers. Aftermarket wheels have more clearance in the hub center to fit different vehicles. I have never heard of this. Is this correct?

Yes, you just need to find the correct size hub ring for the new wheels and your tacoma. Search ebay and Amazon, or ask the tire place if they come with te new wheels.

Yep, hub rings. Some wheels come with them. Discount sells them. They should throw in the set considering how much you are spending with them.

Toyota is not the only hub-centric manufacturer out there. Any quality wheel manufacturer will offer hub-centric wheels designed for you vehicle.

Hub rings are the only way to go with aftermarket wheels. Mine drove me nuts with minor vibration issues till someone on here "enlightened" me about them. If you know what you need Amazon has them cheap, and also Ebay like stated above.

Have you looked at the condition of your tires ? Toyota says to rotate every 5000 miles .Tacoma tires must be road forced balanced using the Haweka adapter on the tire machine [IMG] tsu00296.pdf
When was the last time you rotated your tires ? Are you using LUG centric aftermarket wheels ? have you considered " HUB centric rings " http://www.amazon.ca/s/?ie=UTF8&keyw...l_7ybe1f1pby_e
Have the balance weights fallen off the tires ?

If the wheel allows lug centric lugs, there is no need for the hub centering piece. It's often just a cheesy plastic bit anyway.

Problem is not everyone knows how to install those correctly. It's not hard, in fact, it's logical. But most folks don't think about such things, they just bolt 'em up.

If the wheels do not allow hub centric lugs (uses flat bottomed lugs) then your only option for mounting success is using a hub ring. Cheesy or not.

All good wheels from reputable sellers should come with the right parts.

I was concerned with this too. Back in 98 I put aftermarket wheels on my then-new tacoma and went through 3 sets before I found some that actually worked correctly on the truck and didn't shake. I put a set of Dick Cepek's on my 05 and was pleasantly surprised that they are smooth as glass. Without centering rings also. I've had numerous older pre-tacoma Toyota trucks and a few FJ40's also and never had any issues with aftermarket wheels on any of those. I believe Toyota truck wheels have always been lug-centric not hub-centric. So they shouldn't need hub rings. I've used hub rings on past cars I've had which were hub-centric applications but not on lug-centric applications.

Not sure when Toyota changed, but the newer vehicles are Hub Centric. All of the old solid axle stuff was lug centric. My FJ 40 (which has Mini Truck Front stuff) could care less about what wheels you put on it. My Tundra is picky. Also if you have Hub Centric Wheels they need to be balanced as such to get it right.

I have 18x9 wheels and use aluminum hub rings. There is no vibration at fast highway, 80+, speeds. Before I mounted my tires, I glued the rings in the wheels, so the would not get lost during tire rotations.
