while trying to find a rattle inside the door found the speaker falling off because the adapter (after market) was falling apart. it seems to have absorbed a lot of water and made from what seems like a thick cardboard. I will replace them but is it normal for water to get inside of the door like that? don't want to replace them with mdf if there is going to be water getting inside.

Why i Always tell people DO NOT Mount your cross overs on ur doors but yet people still do.

Build your trim ring out of birch ply, usually hardware stores have cut offs that you can use.
Once you have made all your cuts, paint with resin or a varnish to seal the wood and install:)

I'm going to cut some adapters for the doors out of plastic cutting boards...when I find out how thick they need to be. Anybody know how thick the adapters have to be??

They really don't need to be any "thickness" specifically. ITs more based on ur depth requirements. I have used from .5 to 1 inch thickness without any issues

sh!t CS, and those adapters are crap.
You need a good solid structure with mass or thickness to mount into. It makes the world of difference. All my speaker rings/templates are .5-1 inch thick depending on my required depth. Trim the plastic on the back of the door panel if you need to.

    Starboard also works well

CS? I agree with the thickness this crap adapter they used is a little less then 1/4 thick and then a plastic spacer about 3/4 thick between that and the speaker. the screws only thread into the 1/4 adapter not the spacer.

    Honestly,
Non of these boxes or anything we build for tacoma's is complicated. A basic Jig saw and a super stable hand/ guide is all you need.

I had a shop do the install. after talking with them they suggested jl speakers front and back jl 10"sub and a 5 ch. alpine amp. when I picked it up they put in a jl 8" sub and told me there was no way a 10" would fit. I didn't want to argue with them so just left it. after a few days of listening didn't really like the sound of it or the way they made or installed it. after some searching on here I had mr.marv build me a new box for a 10" jl sub. the fit and finish of his box was unbelievable!!!! the 8" sub box is free if anybody wants it.

it was behind the drivers side back seat. 2011 dblc. I don't have a pic of it installed but I have one of the box I will put up in a min. they took the storage tray out and made the box to fit. the top of it goes up just below the window and bolts from the inside using the same bolt holes used for the storage tray. I don't think it would be worth shipping to MT??

And to answer your question - yes water gets in the doors - the seal between the glass wipers and such isn't waterproof. MDF is horrible when it gets wet, or if it thinks about getting wet. Even sealing them up with resin doesn't always work. I have the templates to make adapters, but I'm out of expanded ABS. Mr. Marv is probably your best bet, or stacking cheap cutting boards.

I could measure it for you but I would search for a better one. this one was full of a white stuffing on the bottom and top. found out it was because the box was to big for the size sub that was in it. mdf was thin and even with a shallow 8" sub it still hit the back of the seat.
