ABS on this truck is dangerous...

    yeah, just watch F1 / race cars when they go off track and slide on grass. It looks like they actually speed up.

    Stopping in deep snow is easy, just let off the throttle, but that's because there is so much drag/friction on the truck parts that are in the snow.

    On low traction surfaces , ABS increases stopping distances over threshold braking or ploughing

    umm, i understand ABS is performing threshold braking, at a much faster rate than a human could. Perhaps our system releases too much brake pressure, and does not operate close enough to the threshold. :notsure:

    If you don't believe me , google " does ABS increase stopping distances on snow " and pick one of the 1000 responses , that way I won't be accused of picking one that supports my position while ignoring others

    Threshold braking done manually , allows you to introduce a period of ploughing into the equation , ABS automatically releases brake pressure at the first signs of ploughing ( slipping ) , so you don't get the advantage of it

    EDIT : maybe calling it threshold braking is technically a misnomer , I'm referring to old school pre-ABS on snow braking , you dig ?

    :laugh: fair enough. To make my opinion clear I prefer ABS versus no ABS. I do like to have the option though, as most modern vehicles do, that ABS stops functioning at speeds less than say 10 or 15km/hr, and an e.brake I can modulate easily :D

    I have a 2000 4Runner and a 2015 Tacoma that just turned 1,000 miles. The ABS on the 4Runner works great. Never had a scary moment with it. Takes alot of pedal pressure to make it work. On the other hand, the Tacoma is way too sensitive. It has scared the crap outta me a couple of times. Barely rolling up to an icy intersection, hit the brakes, and slide on through. The 4Runner never does that. I've been driving these crappy roads for more than 30 years so I feel I know what I'm doing. The ABS is way too sensitive on my truck. I would take the 4Runner's ABS any day over the Tacoma's up here in icy Montana. They did it right back in 2000, why not now?

    Did you ever think that maybe you went from a part of the road that had good traction to a part of the road that didn't and that is why ABS kicked in? If you are going down a slight snow packed incline where it kicked in it is probably the same part of the road that others started to slide and slicked/shined up that part of the packed snow. Sounds like it worked exactly how it was supposed to. Didn't lock up while you had good traction then hits a slick spot and it allows to you steer rather than sliding around and backing in to traffic.

    The only way to tell if an ABS system is inferior to your non-ABS driving skill is to see how far it took to stop with the ABS on then try a few stops without ABS. No one is good enough to tell what the tire is doing exactly to know whether or not the ABS needed to kick in. If it did it is because there was too much braking on the tire and it over came its friction abilities such as this situation. Chances are on slick packed snow you wouldn't have stopped any faster without ABS.

    agreed. 4runner abs won't kick in until you are on it hard, but it does kick in

    VSC and stability control is far more complex to sort out and decide 'where is the strength in the system going to be ?' I think it is highway speed 'moose maneuver' is the primary function...straight line braking on ice or water was secondary. VSC did save my ass at 50mph in snow where I was going sideways on interstate... and I have front/rear dashcam video proof of that

    I've never had a scary moment with mine and I have driven in some pretty bad shit. Maybe I am lucky or maybe I just understand how ABS works and drive accordingly or maybe the pre- '11 dont have this issue.. :notsure:

    So do I in 97% of panic situations. But in that other 3%, when I know what I would like to have happen and can't make it happen because the vehicle has other ideas, then not so much.
