Yeah if you can make it that would be cool. Btw we will be at hollister more like 11. For those that wanna meet in Morgan hill lets sync up at the Safeway off tenant. Need to make a slight detour on the way to pick up a friend of mine, so that could be interesting...

Got a Polaroid Cube this week and my wife made a bean bag on the dash to mount it. Have to play around with it tomorrow.

Let me see how much I can get done on the garage next week and then I'll set it up. Once the garage is fine I can start working on the truck :)

11 sounds good with me. I'll see you guys at the gate. BTW, do you have your tent on your truck all the time? If so, I definitely want to check it out and have my wife see it if she goes. Trying to convince the wife we "need" one, but she is a little hesitant about climbing in and out.

Don't worry about it. I live right next to Tepui and can take my wife over there anytime we want. Just figured I'd check it out if you had it on.

Calling all trailer heads. I was replacing my wheel studs on my trailer today and had some thoughts about my axle.

It has an adapter on it allowing the frame to ride approx 6" lower, which makes perfect sense for a normal trailer seeing normal use.

I was wondering if there would be any obvious reason why I couldn't just loosen the ubolts, flip the whole axle upside down, and gain 6" of lift? (Better for off roading purposes, more clearance, closer to the height of my trailer hitch...)

Sorry for the muddy pics... I don't really wash her. Anybody with any insight please chime in.

    That's a torsion axle.
I'd strongly recommend you do not flip it.

Heyyyy... So when I googled torsion axles, it appears they are an alternative to leaf sprung axles, where the torsion component acts as the suspension. Mine has leaf springs...? And the torsion arm, the piece that appears to move in a operational torsion axle, is welded solid in my trailer's case...

Ghetto fab? It certainly resembles a torsion axle, but it also certainly has leafs, and is completely immobile. Maybe a former torsion axle welded solid??

I purchased this trailer off CL a few years back, with literally zero knowledge of trailer axles and suspension. But it is solid, has hauled major loads of firewood, gravel, etc without any issues.

Would be happy to move this discussion over to a trailer thread, to avoid cluttering up this one, unless y'all could benefit from this information..

It looks like a torsion axle with leafs to me. Which is...weird.
It could just be an offset axle, but even that much offset I wouldn't flip it. If it was strait than yeah, flip it. But offset that much means wicked leverage.

The other thing to keep in mind is most trailer axles are cambered to offset load weight. So just rotating the axle 180 degrees means you are putting the axle camber the wrong way.
If it was mine, since it's already spring over, just get a new strait axle with no offset. They are only like 100 bucks.

Good call. Was also thinking of adding brakes, so might as well just shoot for a whole new setup... Thanks for the input.

Very weird if in fact a torsion axle.

Also, the U-bolt axle attachment hanger has no way to resist the massive torque it'll apply trying to return to the lowest possible center-of-gravity if you invert it.

Right now, the trailer is "hanging" from the offsets. If you change it, it'll be "delicately balanced on top of" those same offsets.

With every bump in the road it'll try and return to the state of minimum potential energy - i.e. where it is now.
