Thanks guys. we actually got engaged 10 months ago, but with my work situation, were jsut recently able to get everything together.

 

Were your cracks at the tie rod arm off of the spindle? I noticed mine are cracked after just a year on them. Did you just grind them out and reweld?

 

yes and yes.

lots of stress in that area, with relatively little weld area compared to the rest of the gusset. perfect recipe for cracked welds. you'll see a lot of newer gusset designs using 2-4 extra pieces of plate to make up a full gusset for the tie rod mounting portion of the spindle.

granted my front end hasn't taken a hit like the one you quoted singe then, but the reweld was still intact last time I looked.

 

First of all a big Contratulations Colin.

I've gone through your entire build thread (every page) looking for your gas tank pics and finally found them (p 239 lol). Anyhow, what was the outside diameter of the two new ends you put on the "T" (fit inside filler tube diameter). I'm looking to do a similar setup but gravity fed instead of pumps - intercepting neck below bed level (if even possible, I haven't pulled it out yet). FANTASTIC build and thanks for all the pics.

 

Thanks, that is what I figured. I think I will add a gusset like you mentioned and are on the ones for retaining sway bar.

 

I need to replicate your aux tank mod.

it's quite nice when you can get 10 mpg, pulling a trailer, and bathroom breaks still govern your stops as opposed to stopping to fill up.

I got great mileage coming home from Gilmer at 60mph. Maybe this driving slow thing you do Colin, is all that it's cracked up to be.

 

Agreed. When you can, and if you still have it, could you post a parts list? I'll need to devise a different way to fill the tank as I've got a cap on top of my bed...

 

that, and you didn't have 50 lbs of driveshaft spinning the whole way home
