Not yet, I did print the recipe and want to try it, but we had so much food, dessert, and alcohol the past 4 days as it was, that there just wasn't room in our stomachs for more stuff!! Definitely plan to try it some other time though, it sounds yummy!

Hey guys! Just copied this info from our Taco's online manual, and now trying to decipher it. Considering fuel injectors were the culprit, it sure seems like the type of fuel we've used, or maybe the injection cleaner additive may be at the heart of the whole thing. So, trying to figure out best fuel going forward.....

FUEL TYPE

UNLEADED gasoline, Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. Your new vehicle must use only unleaded gasoline. To help prevent gas station mixups, your Toyota has a new smaller fuel tank opening. The special nozzle on pumps with unleaded fuel will fit it, but the larger standard nozzle on pumps with leaded gas will not. At a minimum, the gasoline you use should meet specifications of ASTM D4814 in the U.S.A. and CGSB 3.5- M93 in Canada. Do not use leaded gasoline. Use of leaded gasoline will cause the three-way catalytic converter to lose its effectiveness and the emission control system to function improperly. Also, this can increase maintenance costs.

OCTANE RATING
Select Octane Rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. Use of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating or research octane number lower than stated above will cause persistent heavy knocking. If it is severe, this will lead to engine damage. If your engine knocks...If you detect heavy knocking even when using the recommended fuel, or if you hear steady knocking while holding a steady speed on level roads, consult your Toyota dealer. However, now and then, you may notice light knocking for a short time while accelerating or driving up hills. This is no need of concern.

Sounds like this means we can use any octane we want, as long as it's 87 or higher, right? But they're also not advising an octane higher than 87.....so what's best?

GASOLINES CONTAINING DETERGENT ADDITIVES
Toyota recommends use of gasolines that contain detergent additives to avoid build-up of engine deposits. For further details, ask your Toyota dealer or a local gasoline retailer.

"Detergent additives" - they're talking about fuel injection cleaners, right? Wish they were more specific on this whole subject - I really don't want to talk to my local dealer about this!

IMPROVED GASOLINES
The American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) has developed a specification of improved gasolines. The AAMA specification offers optimal fuel information for better vehicle performance and better protection of your engine. Toyota recommends the use of gasolines that meet the AAMA specification, if available, for improved driveability and emission control system.

GASOLINES CONTAINING MTBE
Gasolines that contain MTBE (MethylTertiary-Butyl Ether) are available in the market. If you use a gasoline mixed with MTBE, make certain that it does not contain more than 15 % of MTBE. If the use of gasolines containing MTBE causes poor driveability and/or poor fuel economy, you should discontinue the use of fuels containing MTBE.

From a bit of research this morning, it sounds like this is no longer an additive in fuels in the US, but rather it's been replaced by ethanol, right? Same with the one below (MMT) too, right?

GASOLINES CONTAINING MMT
Some gasolines contain an octane- enhancing additive called MMT (methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl). Toyota does not recommend the use of gasolines that contain MMT. If fuels containing MMT are used, your emission control system may be adversely affected. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the instrument cluster may come on. If this happens, contact your Toyota dealer for service.

GASOLINES CONTAINING ALCOHOL
If you use gasohol in your Toyota, be sure that it is unleaded, has an octane rating no lower than 87 and does not contain more than 10% ethanol. Gasohol is a mixture of gasoline and ethanol. Toyota does not recommend the use of gasolines containing methanol. If you use gasoline containing methanol, use only gasoline meeting the requirements above and also containing less than 5 % methanol with cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors for methanol. Do not use gasohol other than stated above. It will cause fuel system damage or vehicle performance problems. If driveability problems occur (poor hot starting, vaporizing, engine knock, etc.), discontinue the use. Take care not to spill gasohol during refueling. Gasohol may cause paint damage.

And the ethanol topic. Why are they talking about ethanol and methanol together - aren't they different? Does gas in the US contain methanol ever? Do you guys think it's better to seek out gas stations that have no ethanol in their fuel whenever possible?

Thanks Indy.

I just can't help but wonder why the injectors failed - 2 of them this time, plus the 2007 issue.

How often do you guys change fuel filter? How often are you supposed to have injectors cleaned/replaced?

Surely there's some link between the fuel we use and the injector problems, unless having injectors serviced is a routine maintenance thing that we've totally ignored?

I know I'm [IMG]but I want so much to understand what caused this.

Perhaps the question should be, Not why did the injectors wear out/clog/fail after 16 years of service, but why didn't the OBD system catch it or why wasn't a miss or performance issue noted...

Good point, but we did get a check engine light mid summer, then again in September, and unfortunately never pulled the codes (chalked up to loose gas cap). So it's possible that the OBD system did catch it and was trying to tell us there was a problem by throwing CEL, right? And now the codes are gone, which seemed strange to me at first, but then Bamatoy pointed out that they can go away after 5 or so ignition cycles. So now we have no way of finding out if indeed all the computer/wiring stuff was working properly and did it's job to alert us or not, right?

OMG, we got a CEL on the '13 Subaru WRX, with turbo. It got PARKED until we were able to get a OBDII code reader and determine my lovely wife left the gas cap off...On new, high dollar vehicles, we are VERY careful.

The auto parts store had a policy of not taking returns on opened code readers, and tried to sell us an open one. Between parking the car, obtaining a code reader, finding the problem and clearing the code, we probably spend 8-10 hours...

We would rather be proactive than to wait for the expensive noises to follow...

Smart move, and I couldn't agree more, now that we've experienced such an expensive lesson. Will definitely be taking this cautious approach in the future.......

But in addition to that, I'm still so curious as to why the injectors failed. They were cleaned in July 2007. Does it seem normal for them to be clogged again 7.5 yrs later?

All it takes is one bad tank of gas...

I don't go any more than 2 years on the fuel filter before it gets replaced. So set 2 years as your life span on that before servicing and you should be just fine. Some dryer areas of the country you can go further on the filter. Living here in the wet west there is more room for contaminants to get in the systems.

You might have had 1 injector completely plugged,,and the other might have had a really crappy spray pattern when tested, but still able to function enough to mask its imminent failure or blockage. So to just eliminate the possibility of failure in the future, they counted the failing injector as bad which was proper.

Hi guys!

Mechanic emailed me today, saying he's very close to finishing up on our Taco, woo hoo! He said:

"I got the engine in and running, It runs great, the wide band o2 gauge looks like it is running good at idle and under acceleration, no lean condition." YAY, sound great!![IMG]

However, he mentioned one issue that he's going to try to work the kinks out on:

"When warm after a very short stop, 3-4 minutes it fires right up but when warm if it sits for 30 minutes it requires excessive cranking. [IMG] The cold start fires right up. This indicates to me that it is loosing fuel pressure in the fuel rail slowly. Firing up good cold it has the added cold start injector but warm after 30 minutes the pressure bleeds off but the engine is still warm. I will test the fuel pressure regulator and the bleed back on the pump and get it dialed in to fix the issue."

Guys? [IMG] Any thoughts? I am so overwhelmed by all this stuff I don't even know what to make of it, so I'm turning to my Taco World buddies........[IMG]

Fuel pump is losing its prime. Theres is a one way check ball in the pump that is probably bad allowing fuel to drain back into the tank.
I would have the pump replaced with a new one- get a denso replacement from rock auto, they are the same as what your truck came with factory. Id stay away from parts chain pumps (ie advance auto, auto zone, oriellys etc.) As most are lower quality china brands.

Koditten, yes, correct. No issues starting warm before engine change out. What do you think this means?
