Yeah people always forget the weakness in their own stuff. Tacoma are not perfect. Jeeps are not perfect. If Tacoma's came with a SFA they would be pretty close to perfect though.

    I love jeeps....
learned to drive in a 60's Willys...
    we had a 76 cj-5
    I had an 86 cj-7
    Then a wrangler....

My buddy owns a Jeep dealership. I really want one... love the 4 door. Love having a part-time convertible as well...

Suffice it to say, I own a 2004 Tacoma, IMO, far more reliable than a brand new jeep... reliability is everything to me. Especially when it's my vehicle to take me out to the boonies and back.

Warranty/Recall issues is a different story. Toyota took care of these issues, they stepped up.

In this case, Jeep basically told my sister to take a hike while she's still under warranty and lied to her. They did not stand behind their product, stating that she is 0.1k miles.

Frankly, I was just venting, not comparing the two. But thanks to this thread, I read up on the warranty and discovered their lies with your help. As for buying a Jeep, it's been crossed off my list for good.

'Bout the only thing I haven't been towed out from, is a car. But the Jeeps have a 100k powertrain warranty, so it should be covered under it.

Ive never liked Jeeps. Didn't dislike them, but they never did anything for me. BUT, After owning one for a while, I dig it.

Jeep has done the same thing. Every manufacture, by law, is required to "step up" and fix an issue that's under a recall.

I think this is dealership specific. I broke my jeep, by my own doing, took it to the dealer, and they fixed it EVEN when I told them it was my mistake. First time, was fucking up the EVAP canister, and the second time was forgetting to reconnect the hose from the radiator to the over flow tank, while I was fucking around under the hood. After the fixed radiator line (Fixed myself, but took it in to get the coolant off the engine, and check for other damage, as I drove it for a while with the hose off), they cleaned, and inspected all components, then, as I was getting my keys, the service manager handed me a new, still sealed, gallon of the 150k miles coolant they use. Priced around 30 or 40 bucks, NO CHARGE. Now.....my case is a little in the "extreme" of taking care of a customer, as I should have been charged in both cases, but wasn't. if a dealer is going to flat deny a warranty issue, when the customer isn't at fault, then the next call needs to be to corporate.

When I bought my Jeep, the sales manager brought me over to the service manager, and both sat there and said "Listen....many people claim to warranty a vehicle if it breaks, but they try to deny things if they off road the vehicle. Not us. If it breaks under warranty off road, we cover it."
Hard to not like a vehicle, when the dealer is standing behind it like that.

Which dealership do you recommend in the phoenix area? She's north of Flagstaff but visits Phoenix often.

Classic Jeep owner. There is something Americana about Jeeps and their history. Like I have said, there is no other mfg'r in the last few years that has A) Paid attention to the consumer B) Made the advancements they have off road.
Yep, there have been some slips with ownership and direction but, Jeep is what brought America off road.
Today's Jeep's are built for off road adventure. We have to build our Tacoma's.

Well looking at the picture there is a lot of corrosion on the exhaust and axle shaft. Also why would your sister need a 4x4? From the looks of it she hardly uses 4x4.

LOL!! Pretty much. Check out my build thread, and that sounds about right. Where can I get skid plates? "It has them...stock, and steel"
    What about sliders? "Stock"
    Lockers? "Stock"

    and so on.

I find the comparison threads between Jeeps and Tacomas humorous. A Jeep is a fun vehicle offroad and around town. A Tacoma is a small truck with excellent utility. I wouldn't buy a Jeep to do the same things I do with my Tacoma, and I certainly wouldn't try to use a stock Tacoma for the same things I'd use a Jeep Ruby for. IMHO it's an apples and oranges comparison.

Personally I liked the highway stability and low interest rates in my Tacoma over the sort of fun, sort of terrifying handling, of a Jeep along with Jeeps murderous interest rates in Canada. Plus I needed a truck, not an offroad convertible.

PS Good Luck OP! I find that 90 percent of warranty issues are actually dealership issues. It doesn't matter what make a vehicle is, they all have the odd bad egg out there.

I have a Grand Cherokee as a company vehicle and love it. As previously said, the Toyota serves a purpose as does a Jeep. For me, my Grand Cherokee will never be off-road and never cart grass to the recycling center. On the other hand, I will not take my Toyota on a long road trip.

Looking at the picture, she wasn't just using 4wd in snow. Shafts don't sheer off like that. I'm guessing that's why the dealer declined the warranty. Warranties don't cover neglect and misuse (except when lucky like Chris4x4 mentioned). I also have a sister and she lives only a half-hour away. I am constantly working on her Mustang. I know well enough to know that when she tells me something just happened to the car all of a sudden, that I need to take it with a grain of salt and just fix the problem.

Only 36k miles? Surprising. The three different Chrysler built vehicles that I've owned lasted until 60k miles before they started completely falling apart. Must be getting worse?

I've been thinking about buying a used TJ for narrow trails in my area that would otherwise scratch the hell out of the Taco. However the Wranglers tend to hold their value as well as Tacos, so they are expensive.

Never had warranty issues at any of the four dealers we used when we had the Caravan. However, it seemed like everything was designed to fail just after warranty.

A Jeep when subjected to the same conditions will rust just as badly. Chrysler's corrosion protection is no magic.

As others have said, they're praying on your sister being a girl and not knowing the damage. I would either go back with her or go with her to another dealer since I wouldn't trust a dealer that takes advantage of people.
