ABS on this truck is dangerous...

    Just to be clear, it was a Honda Civic that went into the snow bank, and the Tacoma following behind her had no problems stopping in time, and did not engage ABS. So maybe there is an ABS out there that is worse than Tacoma? :notsure:

    edit: I'm just going out on a limb here, but maybe, just maybe, the Tacoma ABS did not engage because there was NO low traction situation encountered, considering proper winter tires, driven at a speed matching the conditions, and no panic braking required on the part of the Tacoma.

    Speculation on my part to acknowledge there just might be other factors/variables at work. You know, like keeping an open mind, then looking at the facts, observations to see if it supports the hypothesis. Scientific stuff.

    and was likely stoned at the time. Explains the long boot-up time, and inability to respond to more than one stimuli at a time.

    Ok, let's take a new turn.

    Have you ever read the threads on this forum where ABS screws up stopping for people off roading on sand? These people disconnected it and their stopping distance was extremely improved.

    I would encourage you (and the others here who think that the ABS Pucker can ONLY be driver error) to find and read those threads. They might give you a new perspective? Or maybe not.

    Good, glad to hear! Why are you still here? :confused: Seriously. The thread title doesn't say that the ABS on YOUR truck is dangerous, it says the ABS on THIS truck is dangerous. Which clearly doesn't apply to your truck. Not much more to say about that, is there?

    Funny thing is people who state that their ABS worked would have stopped their truck in shorter distance than with ABS.
    The only reason why ABS has shorter stopping distance on Dry pavement is because on dry pavement when your wheels lock up, rubber contacting surface is starting to turn to liquid (Ever seen skid marks) So in that one instance ABS gets shorter distance.
    In any other case ABS gets longer distance because every extra turn tire can make its a loss.
    The benefit of ABS is that people don't have to pay attention how they drive. If you pay attention to the road, in emergency situation you will be using brakes properly lock when you need, release when you need to steer.
    Maybe that's whats needs to change.
    Make ABS to disengage when wheels are straight, engage when wheels turn (left/right). That way when you slamming on brakes to stop you lock up, when in straight line. Make adjustment for G force. With high G force means you are on pavement so let ABS engage than with lower G force means you are not on dry pavement and let option 2 (engage when wheels are turned, disengage when straight)
    This can be done on our trucks all it needs to happen is software update with new algorithm.

    I'm still trying to make sense out of this.

    Are there instances where it would be nice to be able to turn ABS off? Yes, absolutely. Would it be nice of Toyota to just put this option in? You bet.
    But until that happens you are either stuck with ABS and can continue to bitch about it or you can deal with it and learn how to drive with it the way it is or you can come up with a mod that either turns it off full time or better yet, turn it off at will. Which I believe some people have.

    Your right, the title of the thread doesn't say anything about "Robs '09 ABS sucks", but I do have a Tacoma which puts "my" truck in this catagory.

    From what I have gleaned out of this thread, it's a bunch of guys bitching back and forth about the pro's and cons of ABS vs. no ABS. Or rather just bitching about ABS. So as to the "why am I here?" portion of your post, I was merely giving the non-bitching side of the coins opinion.

    As far as the guys running in sand, I am sure there are a ton of special circumstances out there that are not the "norm" for alot of people. I personally don't typically travel in sand or dunes so this is of no concern to me. The off chance that I do get on a dune, I am more than confident in my driving ability that I could handle it with ABS, just like I am on snow and ice.

    Have I met your question as to why I am here (seriously) with a reasonable response? Do I have your permission to stay? Maybe you should quarry the OP to change the title of the thread to "ABS sucks on this truck, if you like it, stay the fuck out", until that happens I guess I can go where ever I want.

    Your truck is TRD Offroad Right ?
    That means your system is different, and it will either have no problems or have issue in much lesser form, because systems on TRD OR have extra connection return brake fluid from the ABS pump, hence when ABS kicks in it can provide pressure to one wheel and let pressure out from other wheel in the front or the back at the same time because one line can move fluid in one direction and other line in opposite direction.
    vs
    ABS on non-TRD OR trucks where front and rear have supply line that is shared by both wheels.
