Can someone please explain to me why so many people are against creature comforts? I understand that it's a truck. The bed of a truck is generally used for hauling and mess. In certain circumstances, the interior is used for hauling your sweaty filthy coworkers to another job site.

Having features inside the truck that are standard in damn near every vehicle being produced today isn't too much to ask for. It doesn't mean you don't load the bed with 1,000 lbs of gravel daily, or mulch, or tiles, cement bags, etc. It also doesn't mean that you don't pull a trailer with your rock toy, or bobcat, or lawn maintenance equipment.

So no, these features should not be reserved for the 4runner - some people need a truck. It shouldn't mean you have to step up in to a fugly Tundra either. Yeah, it sucks that you often have to splurge for the premium trim levels to get items that cost practically nothing for the company to implement, but it's nice to have a luxurious ride home after sweating your ass off shoveling crap out of the bed. This 'it's a truck for crying out loud' thing is obnoxious - don't buy new if you want to drive a Flintstones vehicle forever.

The best reason I can think of is that additional features is just "more shit than can go wrong". At the worst, someone might call you a p*ssy because you like to sit in a comfortable seat...? To me, there's no glory in being uncomfortable.

While it is true there's more stuff that can go wrong - leather seats, nicer radios, seat warmers/coolers, etc, aren't usually things that break. It's little components in the engine bay that do.

The main reason I think people shout stuff like that is because deep down they think it makes them seem tougher and more manly, like a Spartan. Buuuut after a long day of manual labor, there's nothing better than a cold beer and a leather recliner, so IDK why your ride home should be any different.

Reminds me of something my little brother told me one time, he was just learning about cars and had the gall to tell me (and I was driving a ground hugging sports car at the time)- "You should change your own oil, a real man changes his own oil". To that I said, a real man also works hard and makes enough money to have someone else do it for him.

Cut & broke off stuff. Prolific ziptie and tape usage.
I just hate touch screens and the rest I don't need. Or at least I don't want certain features badly enough to pay Toyota's price for them.
I'd rather upgrade things myself over a period of time for less $$.

Heated mirrors and heated/cooled leather seats are really the only convenience features I'd like to have on top of what came on my SR5. I'm very happy with the "balance" of features my truck has.

I absolutely love keyless entry and push button start, a large sunroof and power heated seats.

Push button idea is right, but the implementation (usually) SUCKS. It could have been implemented (and was in some cars, notably Mazdas) as a rotary switch mimicking a key, but instead they give us that stupid button without proper tactile feedback.

I'll take the regular keys, thanks.

But +1 on the moonroof and heated seats (power - not so much, one more thing to break, heavy and usually slow to adjust).

How often do you set your seating position? I never change mine, I'll take the infinite adjustability for a perfect seating position over a few seconds of time once when I buy the truck anyday. Most vehicles now have a memory function with power seats to speed up the process.

Hell vehicles with smart keys (push button) recognize your key when you open the door and the seat is already in position before you sit down.

Volkswagens even have power steering wheels that are memory and move into your preset position when you enter.

On all my research on VW forums and on the new 4Runner Limiter (has the same feature) I have yet to see a failure.

Many people that buy the optioned out vehicles get a new vehicle before the warranty period runs out so it is all covered anyway. It is the people that buy used that usually suffer malfunctions and then it is their fault for buying a loaded vehicle instead of the base model.

You can also lock regular keys in a vehicle. Impossible with a smart key. My old VW would even pop the trunk if I closed it with my keys inside.

And us Tacoma owners are stuck in the stone ages with a key, and fob being seperate. Something most car companies did away with in the mid 2000's along with no height adjustment on seats and unheated mirrors.

Luckily all of this will finally be fixed with the new model coming.

Anyone that says they want a basic truck is a liar. Now adays new car buyers expect power locks, windows, a/c, bluetooth, iPod plugs, touch screens, power outlet, better headlights, captain chairs over a bench seat, independent suspension, sound proofing, more power, better economy, disc brakes.

You don't get to pick and choose which ammenities/technologies you get because 99% of NEW car buyers want all those features as standard. Anyone that only buys used vehicles has no say in the matter because they do not spend the money on new vehicles. I bet a lot of the guys asking for a basic truck only buy used vehicles OR buy the base model which are not the volume seller, which is why base models are dying off and getting more and more features standard.

Vehicles have always been upgrading, in the 1990's there were 8-track and carbureter die hard fans. Now fuel injection is the norm, with carb vehicles being "collectors". 8-track? Died before I was born. Years from now multi port fuel injection will be dead and direct injection will be standard, so will smart keys and touch screens.

The best thing you can do is buy the model that best suits you (new or old) and take damn good care of it, because no model will be the same 10 years from now.

One thing I'll be amazed by is if they actually offer that much more in the truck and all the changes being assumed with same or similar sticker price. It's not like Toyota to add a bunch of features without a significant price hike. I realize that's a risky game in today's market but I can see it now.... Wow all these cool added things but screw them on the price ....

We shall see not even a week now ....

There are also those of us who need the utility of a truck but don't have the $$$ for all of the gadgets we are forced to buy. It puts the cost of ownership out of our reach. We are the minority who want a truck for it's utility and simplicity, not for creature comforts and luxury. That choice has now been denied to us. If we can't afford all the extras, we can't own a new truck.

    The better coast
That true with every vehicle. What is a "basic" truck?

You can always buy a used truck. The new car glamor is ok...wears of when your coworkers ask why you smell like chemicals and you have to tell them over and over it's the new car smell.

I want the creature comforts personally. Because when I buy a Tacoma I don't plan on changing for about ten years. I understand the need for a base truck and I think the standard model should be pretty basic, or at least not higher-priced for mandatory features. Now why the Tacoma doesn't have all these things cars have had for years, I don't have a clue. My best guess is because the trucks sell so well they don't require updates.

Ford is well known as being a working man's truck and the F150(best selling full size) has all the bells and whistles, no complaints. Ours has everything except touch screen and touch screen is the only thing I don't want because buttons are easier to find and press without looking and screens show wear really bad where buttons do not. Not a big deal though because it is possible to make a modern and technologically advanced non touch.

A basic truck is a truck with no power locks, crank windows, basic radio, etc. I own that now. I never purchase used. Just my preferance. I like the warrantee, doing my own maintenance with knowing the care the truck receives from day one. Again my preferance.
If I wanted the perfect truck, i could also do without power steering and brakes. I have had these basic trucks in the past and survived. I can do without all the airbags too. I don't need the government to mandate my tire pressure with the useless TPMS. Could probably cut the cost of the truck in half without all these goverment mandates and comforts.
OK. Let the negative comments commence. I am ready. :crapstorm:
