We were looking at Mike's truck on Facebook and my daughter made two comments

    1. "Wow, that's a sick Tacoma." I love this girl.

    2. "Is Jon's truck built yet?"

I had to have one of "the talks" with her.

True. :anonymous: Saved for later though. :D

So confused. I'll have to do more reading up on the stuff you mention.

You too, man! And hopefully I'll be more sober haha

Yeah, it did make the coffee taste better. But holy shit, that is good bourbon.

Honestly... I could probably make it to Moab this year if I took a semester off school and focused on the truck and working more hours. :spy:

    :anonymous:

If anything, working on Mike's truck inspired me to really get my ass moving with this build.

Holy balls. An update ALMOST worth mentioning haha.

Just got the block and head back from the shop where I was getting them resurfaced. They removed .005" from each.

    [IMG]DSC00210 by wyo_taco45, on Flickr

I also had them remove the old valve guides so I have better access when I port/polish. I'll replace them with bronze guides from LCE.

    [IMG]DSC00214 by wyo_taco45, on Flickr

After the port/polish I'm gonna send the head to LCE to get new valve guides and seats, as well as their stage 5 valve train and stage 3 cams installed.

Still looking at getting the LCE 10:1 rod/piston set, but there seems to be a wide range of views on what the compression should be, so I gotta do more reading. The Haltech Sprint 500 ECU seems to fit the bill for a stand alone unit. Coupled with their flex fuel sensor, I'll be able to run multiple fuel types.

Haha speaking of monsters... I just a call back from LC Engineering on a quote for labor to modify the head/valve train. $1750!

    That's $1750 (labor only) to

    - enlarge the cam bucket seats to 35mm
    - install new valve guides
    - install and machine/fit new valve seats
    - install valve train
    - install and lash cams

Does that sound... reasonable? Haha :anonymous: It was a bit of a sticker shock, but LCE is probably the best shop out there for 3RZ work.

Head work is pricey. Has to be acurate to a .001".

And they are damn good at modding Toyota engines.

Seems a bit high. But would be done very well.

Just say fuck it and do it. It'll be worth it to have a built engine you can depend on.

Yeah, the local shop seems pretty nice but I don't think they could do it as good. I think I'll ask the local shop anyway, but this engine will most likely be another victim of "do it right the first time." haha

I agree, it's just not so much of a question of 'if', but 'where'. I have no regrets tearing the engine down. I removed some sensors and the coolant drain from the block today that were gunked up, and the injector cups were so packed with mud that they could only come out by breaking them apart.
