    /\Exactly
What people don't realize is that with ABS you need to have extra space and lower speed especially in bad conditions.
For those of us who drove good portion of our life in cars with no ABS in bad conditions, that system is driving crazy.
If you are N00B in driving than this system will be the best thing since sliced bread.
To me it sucks because suddenly I have to have extra car length of space, and drive 10 MPH slower than what I used to do.
Not only this garbage costs extra when you buying a car, it will cost you in repairs in future, it also makes you drive like a n00b.
    :frusty:

Than maybe ABS should be an option.
N00bs can shell out extra $2000 for a system to make them feel good.
The rest of us can save that money for lets say 4 sets of Winter tires that will last you life of the car.

    Sorry Grandpa :D.

This is the way the world is. Everything is towards safety. I work in an office most of the time in the winter and I have to wear steel toes all day. They're cold and they weigh a ton. If I ever had to move in a hurry from my desk I'd be dead. I just accept that's the way the world is.

Like I said, you just want your 1979 pickup back.

I'd take both Winter Tires and ABS. It shouldn't be one or the other lol.

Also, ABS hasn't be worth $2000 in a very long time. I almost bought a Saturn new when I turned 16 just so I could have a new car. That's over a decade ago. Even then ABS was only a $495 option in Canada.... I doubt it costs more than $200 in parts to build the ABS for Toyota.

FYI , ABS is not mandatory on passenger vehicles in Canada

    4 speed sensors at $200 a piece = 800

    $1000 for a unit

Another $200 in Labor, brake lines extra cables

$2000 extra is a low estimate.

You're quoting your cost, not Toyota's. The Sync system in a Ford is worth just under $3000 to install, and worth under $100 in parts to Ford. Anyways I think we've taken this far enough off topic. I'm all for listening right now over speaking. I've said my piece. I dropped out of this conversation before because people are only speaking and no one's listening.

Not everything, all the time, in all conditions.

An insurance company's income statement ends up being based on the average, and would suffer if they got rid of ABS.

They probably feel mandatory backup cameras are a better thing to work on rather than if ABS causes a few people to slide down a snowy icy hill at 7 mph and get tboned in an intersection.

    So here we are.

I am the one payign for the truck, so yeah I am quoting my cost not cost that Toyota produces this at. So in Canada you guys can buy trucks at the manufacturing costs ?
In US we have to pay market price (or what Toyota wants for them)

 I'm pretty sure Toyota didn't add $2000 on to your truck for the ABS. Believe what you want, but when features are standardized the cost drops substantially and to stay competitive those savings are transferred to the consumer.

I don't pay what Toyota wants for there truck, if you want to pay sticker that's your business.

Get some snow tires and report back. Nothing works 100 percent in all situations other than driving within the capabilities of yourself and your vehicle.

Look at how the computer locked those brakes up to get the minimum stoping distance.... wait... it didn't... WTF F@CK C*@# B@#$):mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Pretty neat system. I'm guessing that trailer and some other things must have to be dialed in pretty tight to get those results though. The computer usually isn't that good. Even if it's from Sweden.

Its clear you missed what NHTSA wrote as to what ABS system function is so let me post it again

Thanks, it all makes sense to me now. I took the liberty of highlighting (yelling actually, but who cares this is the internet and you're my enemy right) relevant text from a government website I just googled that has a whole bunch of disclaimers in it and doesn't state anything in affirmatives

Just a random serious thought, has anyone with ABS issues ever tried switching to more aggressive brake pads and rotors? I know with over sized tires, particularly heavy LT tires, that the Tacoma stopping distance gets nearly ridiculous. I wonder if the people who throw better pads and rotors notice a bit of improvement or nothing at all.

Also, has someone tried stopping a 2007ish truck on some ice and then done the exact same speed and braking with a 2013ish truck? I know people have mentioned Toyota "retuned" the Tacoma's ABS and braking system sometime in the 2009 model year. I wonder if the difference of opinion has just as much to do with that change as anything.

Plus, if I lived in an area with all gravel and snow on gravel, I'd probably disable my ABS too. Just saying.
