are you asking if a cap creates wind noise ?

 

For sure. Blacked out windows provide security (out of sight, out of mind) but you can't see squat behind you without the cam.

There are things that I put in the back of my capped truck that I would never put in an SUV. Like two wet stinky dogs after a beach day!

Cap it! Love mine and can't imagine my truck without it. But..it depends on your uses. I use it a lot for camping, taking my big ass dog around and securing items since I also have two kids in the cab.

 

I find a cap works well for my needs - and if I need to take it off for some reason, meh, it's not that hard.

 

Another CAP IT vote. Would never have, and never had a truck without one. From firewood to gear for tradeshows, never had a lack for space. Anything too long goes on top, anything too big goes on the trailer. And it keeps everything as secured as it can be. Visibility has never been an issue, at least I haven't backed into anything yet...

Cap it with a Softopper.. Easily removable and still provides protection from the elements.

Plus they are cheaper

 

would never have a truck without one - so much more useful, rides better, quieter, functional, etc. the only reason I could see not having one is if you never go anywhere (try traveling with your stuff exposed) and do anything, or you carry dirtbikes, etc. that's about it.

 

I've personally found it to be quieter with a shell on since the wind isn't swirling around right behind the bed. Not to mention the truck rides smoother, isn't so light in the tail (better traction), additional rollover protection when off-roading... or hell, on-roading

 

My family likes the truck with the cap on it. Keeps all of our stuff dry and we can put stuff in the bed that we would normally not put in the back seat.

My new 2015 is my third truck since 1998, and none has had a cap. My wife wants one, but I like the open bed. Bigger things like bikes fit better and are easier to load.

One solution when taking trips with the family (skiing, for example), is to use big tupperware-type containers to store stuff that might get wet or snowed on. Works well for clothes, food, etc. Make sure to wrap with a bungee cord so the top does not come flying off at speed, and when you get where you are headed your stuff is dry and in a container you can lift out.

I do get sick of shoveling snow out of the bed, however, and it looks like another 1 - 2 feet this weekend...

 

Cap it if it fits your needs. I've had trucks I wouldn't cap, but have one on the Tacoma. For those who say a "real" truck doesn't need one, a "real" truck is at least 3/4 ton and powered by a large block. I'm not hauling 2K lbs in my taco's bed. I'm more concerned with keeping things dry and secure than I am what the "real" trucks are doing.
