The drums are fine but I cried a little inside whenever I saw my 06 taco next to my bros 03 4runner with disc brakes. It's just a sign of production cost cutting. But Toyota always saves the good stuff for 4runners anyway, that's why they're not made in Mejico...........yet.

I wonder if the rusted frames will also carry over...

they were a carry over from the first gen to second gen now maybe 3rd gen can have a section on rusted frames.

All of the last generation GM trucks in the LE and SLE trims came with rear drums. GM tried rear discs on that generation and they had issues.

Don't knock the guy, Drums have a place IMHO and his. We are all entitled to our own opinions.

I'm with you, I'm not sure how anyone can argue that drums are superior in any way other than keeping costs down (the entirety of Toyota's R&D these days... cut cut cut).

The only thing I would add though is that given the pretty extreme front weight bias in a pickup truck, with no load it's doubtful anyone would really need disc brakes all around. But, if you are pulling a close to capacity load a lot of the time, I would not look at a truck either without discs all around.

I think the "new" taco will be like the recent "new" tundra. SOS with new sheet metal. 5 or 10 more years like this and Toy will be out of the truck business.

I was agreed until this point. Bahahaha. Toyota isn't going anywhere in the next 10 years or the ten years after that.

I would've loved to have seen all wheel disc brakes.... You know, it being a 2016 model and all.

Looks like the Tacoma will be traveling to the beat of a different "drum"!

Yeah, maybe, just venting a bit here.

One of the car mags I get had a comparison of tundra/f150/ram/chevy this month. The tundra sucked, last place. They ask the same sort of question, wtf is Toyota even doing in the pickup business? This is a "new" tundra model too, just like the 3rd gen taco will be "new".

The thing about the taco, imo, is that if the big-4 are going to make full sized pickups that get better mileage, tons more room, hauls way more, modern tech features, and so on than a taco, why on earth would anyone buy a taco?

I've been brand loyal on toy trucks so far, all my trucks going back 25 years have been Toyotas. I'm just not anymore, I see way more value elsewhere.

You just gotta buy the truck that suits your needs. Some folks don't need to tow 7,500lbs of stuff. Others get by fine with 236hp and 2WD. Comparisons with other vehicles always end up being a compromise anyway. Some can afford $34,000.00+ for a high-falootin' mid sized pickup, others cannot.....

Car and truck magazines are just like the computer industry....you just gotta have the latest and greatest or you cannot survive the rest of your life.

    Well,

    1) I buy Toyota because of reliability and resale value,

    2) I don't haul/tow anything large,

    3) Not as expensive to buy/maintain, as well as easy to maintain,

    4) I like that the Tacoma is not too bulky. Makes driving/parking easier,

    5) More tech stuff means more stuff to break. I like the simplicity of the Tacoma,

    6) IMO, the 2nd gen Tacoma is the best looking truck on the market.

so for these reasons, the Tacoma still wins hands down for me.

As far as drums, Toyota put drums on these trucks for a reason. With such a light rear end, discs would be too grabby and probably lock up too much.

The Tacoma isn't meant to be a super hauler/tower. If it was, Toyota would have put discs in the back.

Unless they changed out proportioning valves and applied more braking Bias towards the front, I really see no benefit to rear discs. A truck would need a larger set of discs with beefy calipers to withstand the heat generated at the rear especially when towing or you would be warping them all day long. You would still need to retain the e brake function so regardless you will always need to have some sort of mini drums in the rear.

Because the Taco is NOT a full size truck, eh? Some people might want a truck that fits in their garage. Others might want a truck they can take off road with out ripping out their sidewalls on narrow tracks, doing 70 point turns on hairpins and high centering all over the place.

Small does not equal cheaper. Large does not always equal better.

I mean, why would anyone buy an orange when there are apples around?

If you value load carrying, towing, leg room, etc. etc. then clearly a larger truck is going to be a better value. They don't cost that much more than a Tacoma and mileage isn't that much worse. But you better be fine with a large truck and the downsides that come with a large truck.

It would seem most people think like you. Just look at the sales numbers. The F150 sells arount 800,000 units a year in the US. The Tacoma sells around 150,000 units a year. The mid size truck market is a lot smaller in the US than the full size.

On the other hand, Toyota absolutely dominates the mid size truck market. The numbers for the other mid size trucks are laughable compared to Tacoma.

So to me it looks like the Tacoma is serving its market niche just fine. I know the reasons it works for me. I completely understand why it doesn't work for a lot of other people.
