When I changed the spark plugs the plugs out of the truck were gapped to about .50 mm and I found threads that say it should be gapped to about .38mm to .41 mm. So what I did was gap them to about .46 mm to .48 mm. Would anything like that cause problems with these trucks? I got the spark plugs from the Toyota dealership BTW. Thanks in advance

All of those numbers are way too tight, gap spec is .044", or 1.12mm, for both 4 cyl. and V6 models

Spark Plug gap needs to be .039 to .043 (max), per the FSM.

You're correct, I got my specs from NGK, and they apparently want a thou or five more. Max spec is .057" in the FSM though, so .044" will still work.

I forgot my 0 in front of the numbers so I should be ok?

I wonder why the factory plugs were around .050mm then

Are you getting MM and inches mixed up here? 0.5mm is approximately 0.020", roughly half of spec.

If you're not confusing your units, then your plugs are gapped WAY too tight.

0.050 Thousanths of an inch is what you mean surely.

0.050mm would be 50 microns which is pretty damn small.

The gap grows when used. After 30k miles, its not uncommon for the gap to be near .050"

I gapped them to around .040 or .045 should I be ok or redo them and make it tighter?

You're good. That scale is in thousandths of an inch - you gapped your plugs to about .040", so you're good. The .050" the old plugs had was from wear as Chris said.

Edit, if the gap varied between .040" and .045", then I'd be more concerned about making them more even.

Depending on the mileage you have the truck. The gap was set at .044" and its normal to have a .050" gap on a plug with 20,000 - 30,000 miles on it. The metal erodes, due to heat and wear.
Toyota likes to use 3 Denso and 3 NGK on the assembly line. They have contracts with both plug manufactures.

    Think of it this way....,

If the gap never changed over time with use.... We'd never have to change them. :D

I changed my plugs today, 28,099 on the odometer, as my fuel mileage seemed to have dropped somewhat over the past few thousand miles, maybe 1-2 mpg.

The original plugs were Denso's on the passenger bank, and had a gap of 0.046-0.47 inches, while the driver bank were NGK's and had a gap of 0.047-0.048 inches.

    I replaced all with Denso's pre-gapped at 0.042-0.043 inches.

Upon re-start the truck seemed to run much smoother, and I'm looking forward to seeing a mileage improvement.
