I ran some 93 with no diff in mpgs. I would not waste my money. I use 87. Now my carbeb Mercury with milled heads is a,whole different deal. Running 140 lbs of compression I run 93.

Personally, when gas prices started getting about 3.50 for me I stopped using premium and went back to reg, but now that it's dropped below $3 I'm going to start using premium again. I might just be fooling myself but I really feel like I can notice a difference in throttle response and power with the higher octane. I've never really noticed much difference in MPG's though.

IMO it's more important what brand gasoline you buy than what grade you choose at the pump. The "premium brands" supposedly have more additives and leave less deposits, that's why I try to pick Shell when I can vs going to the no-name discount places.

I also noticed a nice bump in throttle response with Mobil high test. I tried three tank fulls this past summer. Unquestionably, 93 octane gives my motor more response.

You are probably right! Especially the obscene gas prices back then. Just filled up with 87 today....$2.15 gal. I have seen the light! Lol.

 

Ah, DAMN. Guess I'll start using 87 in my supercharged Tacoma.

The V6 in the Tacoma can have some pinging even when its stock. A quick google search brings up hundreds of posters who have had issues with there Tacoma pinging. I wouldn't call them fools for using 91 to smooth out there ride...

Took me a while to dig up the source of this info. The 2007-2009 FJ Cruiser, which had the same single-VVTi engine as the Taco, was spec'd for 91-octane and rated at 239 hp / 278 lb-ft: http://toyota2.tekgroupweb.com/article_download.cfm?article_id=2589 91-octane was a hard requirement for the FJ. The manual even states engine damage may result if you use 87 long-term: http://www.toyota.com/t3Portal/document/om/OM35A05U/pdf/sec_6-1.pdf

There is no hard evidence that the Taco's ECM will automatically adjust ignition timing to make more power on 91-octane.

In my area, 91-octane contains no ethanol while 87 and 89 can have up to 10%.

 

Mine pings a bit on low octane fuel. It also doesn't hold 5th gear as well on inclines. Same speeds, same hills, on 87 octane it'll need to downshift. I think that's about as valid proof I can get short of dynoing it.

The TRD website lists those higher HP/torque numbers on the supercharger page. I assume they are basing everything on 91 octane there since the SC requires it.

Until 2007, the manual recommended 91 or better. That year, they got rid of that line in the manual but it's hard to say why.

 

I'm throwing away money - at least today I did! I'm trying an experiment just 'cause I'm from Missouri (the Show Me state) - I am trying 93 octane at the hella expensive price of $1.93 a gallon ...

WTF - I haven't paid that little for gas since I don't know when! Almost a buck cheaper than the 87 I put in on a road trip back in November LOL

Just fueled up with 93 ethanol free today to throw some more pennies into the wind. I'll probably just end up doing 55 mph for the entire tank just to see how I do.

 

Does altitude factor into this at all? I'm at about 4.5k elevation.

 

Actually, at high altitude low octane gas behaves more like high octane gas for reasons already explained. If the 91 is non ethanol and the 87 has ethanol in that's another story. Ethanol free gas does contain more energy than gasoline with 10 percent ethanol.

 

What has become acceptable in debating differing opinions, is to degrade, debase, or otherwise offer a degrading parting shot at the other side.

May I offer this comparison?
People have a different levels of sensitivities, most discussed, pain. Allergic reactions can also be considered.
Is it too much to accept that someone feels a difference, can document a difference in fuel type, or an addition of an intake or exhaust system, while others cannot?
