    Is that a protective metal cap on top of the spindle? I've never seen that done before. Seems kind of pointless.

    Regardless of what the original cause was, he opened the cover and now there's dust in there.

    You're the first person I've ever heard suggest replacing a PCB on a hard drive. If your HDD really needs a board, I'd really only go to the trouble if you are doing some really necessary data recovery. If it's simply you want to re-use the drive, I wouldn't bother. A dying drive is a dying drive.
    Instead, take advantage of the warranty. Most of the companies have a really good 5 year warranty. Hitachi used to have a website where you just typed in the S/N and it would tell you if you qualify.

    I took it to my neighbor who does PC repair. He opened it after he was unable to boot from it. It was my next move anyways. Good thing I backed it up 6 months ago. I will lose some things but not everything.
