Griffins are awesome! Another breed that doesn't shed as much would be an Airedale terrier.

I think my girl was getting cabin fever, she seemed a little down yesterday so I took her out and let her run around in the snow for an hour and a half or so.

She was intrigued by the hundreds of geese in the river, but she hates water with a passion.

Question for the dog owners here.
My lab Jake developed an aural hematoma about 2.5 weeks ago. Pretty sure he got it from shaking his head and slapping his ear on the coffee table. I took him to my vet and they prescribed some ear drops and anti-inflammatory pills. They said if the swelling doesn't go down significantly after a week then they would want to drain the fluid and put in a cannula that would allow the ear to be drained.
Well it's been a week and the swelling seems to have stopped but has not decreased in size much, maybe a little. I really would like to avoid the procedure if possible.
From some research on the internet I have found several different methods of treatment (some seem rather cruel) but I have seen some vets that say let nature take its course and heal naturally.
I was wondering if anyone here has had to deal with this before and what are your thoughts??

Here is a video that I found pretty informative. Jakes ear is pretty similar in swelling as the dog in the vid.

Riley had the same thing. We tried draining the pinna and it refilled. If you wait too long, surgery isn't really an option and option three, let it absorb back into the body, is the only one and absorption takes a long time.

I chose the surgery based on the recommendation of the vet. His surgery was successful but you can expect something of a PITA as far as healing goes. As you know, labs are pretty active. 14 days is a long time to sit on your pup :D

PM me if you want more specifics.

Hi Whiskey !!, beautiful Choco...congrats...:thumbsup:

Awesome to put up the link ...:thumbsup:... going to check it out in a min..

How ever you do it I'd def. get Jake's ear drained ASAP !! That kind of injury (like "water on the knee") Can turn into a staph infected brain melter, not trying to be funny, but if that shit goes toxic Jake's life span is a couple hours..

It's like any bruise. Blood fills a cavity (the Pinna) and coagulates. Once it's dry, the body re-absorbs it. Like the video suggests, this can lead to cauliflower ear or not.

If you drain the ear, there is no guarantee it won't fill again. So if you do not choose surgery, it's a crap shoot as to how many times you will need to drain the ear. You can kinda see the hole they used to drain his ear the first time.

Yeah forgot to mention that 99% of the time fluids get absorbed But my pup of years ago had this same issue & we assumed absortum would take care of it, & it did but took forever to do but because of all the small vessels in the inner & outer ear & swelling some fluid had turned to infection, went down the ear canal almost to brain stem resulting in some hearing loss

I'm going to speak with the vet tomorrow and see what she thinks. She really is a good vet and I value her opinion, so we will most likely go with her recommendation.
Thanks for all the insight guys!!

I feel very fortunate to have a vet that I trust and who doesn't seem to be in it for the money.

He's super happy out in the woods! :)

I don't want to give you false hope or anything but my friends had a rottie with a mast cell tumor that the vet, after he removed it, gave the dog at most 6 months to live. Two+ years later she was totally fine from the cancer, (and this was after they decided not to do the prednisone and other options the vet gave them for followup treatment - the only change they made was upgrading the quality of her food a bit) but they ended up having to put her down for unrelated issues. Good luck to you and Dixie!

Meet Cole, he came to live with us right after thanksgiving. one of those odd circumstances where I got a text from a friend of a friend who knew a guy acting as the executor of an estate were Cole and his brother lived. Unfortunately Cole's owner had passed and one of the neighbors had adopted Cole's brother. So he was all alone and needed a new home pronto or it would be off to the spca.

He is a great dog and has fit right in with the family. Also really glad we could give the pup a good home.

Haven't seen swelling on Riley. But I'd call the vet. She could be having a reaction to the med the vet should know about.
