Let's add a couple regarding aftermarketeering possibilities. I'm sure someone is already planning on replacing front/rear bumpers, modifying grills, adding nerf/bull/headache bars, and socially unacceptable window stickers.

On what planet does the V6 have the same power as the V8?

    The 4.0 Makes 239 hp with 278 lb·ft
    The 3.5 Makes 280 hp with 245 lb·ft
    The 4.6 Makes 385 hp with 369 lb·ft
    the other 4.6 Makes 347 hp with 339 lb·ft

I'm not super good at math, but if my calculator is correct, the v8 makes almost 150 more hp and almost 100 torques more than the current 4.0.

the v8 4runner lost the v8 probably due to the gx460. they are the same platform.

why but a $65k lexus gx460 when you can have the same thing in a 45k 4runner v8.

The 4Runner lost the V8 because fuel prices had gone up significantly around 2006-2007 and many were sitting idle on dealers' lots.

04 had less hp than the 05 or 06 and a different tranny. Best years were the 05 and 06.

VVTi was added around 2005 for both 4R and Tundra if I remember correctly. The 4.7L was a heavy motor, though, with an iron block.

Pretty stupid comparison. Bornwildguy is correct, 2005-2006 Tundra got the vvt-i on the 4.7l and the Aisin 750 auto trans. 282hp/325 torque rating in 2005, revised due to different SAE standards in 2006 to 271hp/315 torque.

Either way the torque numbers are helpful, especially towing.

Rock Lobster is probably unfortunately correct we'll never see a V8 in the Tacoma. Sweet engine note with a V8. Just get the torque up jeez. It would be so nice to have a midsize with torque numbers that could make it a good tow vehicle.

Actually I weighed my 2005 Tundra 4.7l 4WD Access Cab and the 2012 Tacoma on the same scale. 4920 lbs for the 2005 Tundra, 4390 lbs for the 2012 Tacoma V6 4WD Access Cab.

The Tundra was supposed to be 4700 lbs also. Yeah, I did have 140 lbs of skid plates on the Taco. But, on the other hand I had 26 gallons of fuel in the Tundra when I weighed it. I only had about 4 gallons of fuel in the Tacoma. 22 gallons x 6.3 lbs = 138 lbs so it's a wash.

The point is, they're only about 550 lbs pounds difference in weight. Not actually a great point, but I thought I'd mention it.:) Just wanted to mention that I'd weighed both the trucks and there was not a 900 lb difference.

Still better looking than 2001-2004 Tacos. :p The 1996-2000 ones were all right.
