I paid every dime of school for myself. Worked a lot of hours to do it, too, since I didn't want student loans. Life is not a free ride.

I think the problem with anything along these lines is that 40% of people see this as a step into anarchy, and 40% see it as a step to fixing systemic issues in america, but the other 20% don't care. So we get to slog along doing nothing different and expecting things to get better. More money will, of course, not fix everything, but less won't either.

I just can't bring myself to think that we should focus our efforts on maintaining the status quo and complaining about it. There is no magic bullet to fix the issues we all face in our counrty, speaking for the US citizens, but thats what we are offered most of the time. Is this a perfect idea, no. Is it a start in looking at the serious issue of college costs, maybe.

If there is one thing that is always worth the cost, it's education. So the question i would ask is what would we have to loose if you could walk into a community college and take any class you want for free? What would you want to learn?

I would take chemistry and lit. classes.

    ...yep, I did as well...

I worked to get through engineering school at a public university, ...while there got a couple small scholarship awards for academic achievement (by working my butt off :D) to help offset the costs a little, graduated w/out any school debt... ...and glad for it!

We've made such a smashing success of the Public School System K-12, it just makes perfect sense to expand into the College years!

Just one thing... How 'bout some of that free money to bail out the kids who even now are starting out !00k in debt from student loans?

The k12 system is a success. And I agree, maybe some sort of conscritped services that could get credits against outstanding loans. It exists for some people now, why not expand it.

The major success of the k-12 system today is to indoctrinate children with the political/religious values of the governmental agency providing funding for that education. Public education was a good idea, but has gone sour in recent generations, pouring out illiterate high school graduates by the thousands each and every school year. The system has a sickness of inbred incompetence and complacency that is highly resistant to reform, much like our revered system of government in these United States.

Right.... I guess we can thank them for the outstanding quality of student education these days.

U.S. scores below average in education and ranks 17th among the 34 OECD countries.

    Way to go Teachers Union!

I think we as tax payers will foot the bill wether or not we want to admit it. You will pay for people to be un-employed and under educated or you will pay for people to go to college pick one. Personally I loved my time in college I think it changed the me for life, I can only hope that others have the opportunity to pursue education.

The community college system was invented by California under the concept that EVERY student can access some form of post secondary school education. The very best go to the top level schools, the State University, the next level of students go to the regional state colleges, and the rest can go to community colleges. The rest of the country has followed this model with good success. And many states now have a system where you can do your first two years of academic work for a BA or BS degree at a state university at a local community college in a low cost environment.

We have long known that higher average education levels are associated with higher income levels, better family stability, lower rates of petty crime and higher rates of progressive political thought.

One of the factors above bothers one of the political parties:)
