Ok may I ask a question that I have not been able to find the answer to??? Thanks, I am gonna ask any how , sorry. On my fiberglass topper I have a yakima roof rack that I attach my mountain bikes to. I have seen some people mount their RTT to those and I am good with that. But when I mounted the pedestals on the topper I did not place them out on the side edges of the topper. They are about 8 inches from the edge. So if I mount the RTT on my rails, do you think it will create issues weight wise for the fiberglass topper. Ok now I have to say They might call me oldmancrash but I am a plump oldmancrash. Not real bad but kinda. Ok maybe a little worse then kinda. Thank you

:notsure: It depends on the topper I think. Check with the manufacturer of the topper to find out how much weight it can support. I know most brands have a tag inside with the model and serial number, that should tell you all you need to know. Some are reinforced and would be fine to hold the RTT and any "plump" occupants, others are not.

Ok so I looked and I have a Custom Hardtops from Longbeach CA, Mfgrs of SNUGtop and Rebel. I tried looking by serial number but nothing. It has a carpeted headliner so I cant find any inside tag. I am going with, it has a heavy load capacity from what I have found about their other models. So I should be ok with a RTT and we being plump LOL HAHAHA ya aint gonna live that down for a while MTgirl

    You said it first!! :p

I'd do a little more research on the model....or you could just climb up there and jump around and see what happens :notsure: don't do that....

If you can't mount one to the topper there are other options - either a custom built rack or a commercially available rack that goes over/around the topper. I know there is a style of racks made for contractors that need to carry ladders and lumber around that mounts between the topper and the truck bed and then has tubular supports that run outside of the topper. Can't think of the brand right now....

I went down to All-Pro today and visited. Very nice people. I hope to send some business their way here shortly. I also called snugtop and the guy said their toppers max load is 200 lbs. SO I guess I need to look for a Rear rack that will fit around the topper. Thanks for your help and recommendations MTgirl

If you want a pretty simple rack and dont feel like paying Allpro price then let me know, We could whip one up for ya pretty quick I bet.

I build Lisa's(MTGirl) and I think only took a week since I was going to school.

I would love to get a aluminum front bumper from AP, just saying cause my birthday is coming up. :D

I had a friend in eugene who had exactly what MTgirl is talking about. seems like the 1st gens are a little easier to build around since the bed is not plastic, or composite or whatever the hell mine is. Think he picked it up of CL or something like that, but it was sweet. he hauled lumber/laders, plus had custom bike mounts fab'd for it.

wouldn't think it would be to hard to fab one up as long as you have the tools...I'd totally bring some beer and shout encouraging things!

I wish I had a garage too, I can whip it up at my parents though. What year Tacoma do you have?

I think I still have the old designs somewhere. Its pretty simple, worst thing about is is making sure its level and drilling holes into the rails on ur bed

I have a 95 actually I believe build date was 11/94. A lot of the stuff I have been looking at is for 95.5 and newer. I have one of those plastic slide in bed liners. I am going to get rid of it this summer and line the bed myself. Would the rack fit over the topper? I am good with drilling holes in the rails.

This is similar, honestly nicer as well, as the one I built lisa.

Hmmm that's interesting...dunno how much I would like putting an RTT up that high..majorly top heavy and wind resistant I think. Even Monte's (blackdawg) has his sitting lower than that.

I am trying to find the pic of the simple one I built lisa, its somewhere in this thread I just can't seem to find it. Was about two years ago.

I guess I had not thought about the weight up that high. I first learned about overlanding from a series of videos by expedition overland. I figure you know of them. From Bozeman. Their taco has a RTT on their topper

Ok so here is my thought process. I like my topper so I can secure what ever is in there, kitchen equipment, fridge, clothing, heck you know what we take. I am hoping to take a trip the summer 2016 for a month or 2. Would really like to go up to alaska and do some gold mining(a side hobby of mine). And I think securing stuff could be important. Hence sticking with my topper. But please if I am wrong or you have another idea please tell me. I am very green in this. And I really appreciate all the ideas I have gotten from here
