Check out this build. Monte does quiet a bit of camping and such in his and just trucks it all in the bed in tubs and stuff. As far as going to Alaska, well that's your call. Im sure we could make one to go over the topper, just dunno how well it would turn out, and how safe.

Oh I am agreeing with you about how safe. I just had not really thought about it(dumb on my part). I was figuring I could just mount the RTT to my yakima rack. But now knowing the topper cant take the weight that is out. I like the RTT because I just like the idea of tenting off the ground with the critters. I am a chicken shit when it comes to bears. Nothing else bothers me except the damn bears. HAHA Yea blackdog is the person who referred me to this site. So it is all his fault if I am a pain LOL I have cruzed many pages of his Frankenstein build. Actually his trip up here in the bitterrot area and using his ham radio fo rhelp is what caught my attention. I have been a ham for many many years. I believe it was his end of summer trip I was reading. I sure enjoy reading all these write-ups about the adventures

What do you guys run for radios when out? 2 meter or CB or both? Several years ago I had a complete HF setup in my S10 and it was fun to drive down the road and talk to people around the world.

Not sure how I'd feel about camping in AK (with the big bears) directly over a food source....I don't even like that aspect of it much here so I use bear boxes where ever possible.
If you're doing an extended trip have you thought about doing a trailer? Like this...

YUP I am all about nerves and bears. It never use to get to me. I have spent many many nights on the ground in a tent. But my last few years I have become use to motorhomes. Sure is nice. 2 years ago hunting I set up my tent along a creek and settled into my sleeping bag and my brain went into overdrive. About an hour later I was in my sleeping bag inside my buddies truck while he was sleeping in the bed of the truck. My wife and I both have talked about tent camping again and we both have decided in our old age its gotta be off the ground. Oh believe me I am very careful with food and storage.

WOW I like that rack. Nice design and build mizzac!

WOW a brave man right there

I'll have to find my elk camping story for you. On my phone now, searching sucks. Lets just say hearing non-human footsteps outside your tent at 3am while in bear country is not a nice way to wake up. all sorts of things start going through your head.
The RTTs are nice. They are still just tents but very comfy, safer tents.
Oh, and I designed it, Mac built it.

 Oh I know how well the over active brain works at the hints of a few strange sounds. I was next to a little creek and it kept sounding like something stepping in the water. When what I think was a rock rolling down the creek happened. I was outta there. Fat boys can move quick when needed. But I can say that the front seat of a 2014 ram quad cab is not a comfortable place for a 260 pound 6'2" guy to sleep during hunting camp LOL OH yea I guess I should add we were hunting north of Lincoln in one of the highest griz population areas in montana
