They can't fill these apprentice shop position cause the kids can't do the basic shop math in the first place. Too much effort on teaching how to be politically coorect and not enough time spent on the three R's

A degree in anything. I was told I could not pursue anything in any of the local unions without some sort of a degree. I have over 1 year of residential framing experience and there were people walking in with a degree in **** that were getting membership/apprenticeships/jobs. I'm sorry but I will never understand this. If I'm building a house I want the person most qualified Imo the most experienced building my house. You could have a degree in rocket science but if you have never built a rocket I am sure as hell not going to be the first to ride your rocket to the moon. I understand unions vary from region to region this is just my personal experience with our locals. I have multiple family members that were in local unions for many years, and still could not get me in pulling on some strings. It is whatever, the problem really lies with those who have no drive. I'm a very driven individual and hardly ever take no for an answer (unless its the Girlfriend telling me not to buy something I don't need). I'm not one to make excuses, as I am pursuing a degree in Computer Science. I just wanted to make it noted that there are still high school graduates out there that would very much like to go straight to working in the trades. The trades were always an alternative to going to college, but recently this has started to change.

    That's dumb

    What about a non-union apprenticeship ?

In Canada , the Federal Government offers interest free loans , grants and tax credits for apprenticeship in order to create more people in the trades , union membership is not mandatory

It's not that more people need to have schooling beyond high school. Why can't they just make a school for common sense? It seems like this is what our general population is lacking...

Indiana Carpenters union apprenticeship only seems to require a High School diploma or GED , no ?

Applied, and tested plenty high enough. This was after I had 1 year of experience framing, and was told I was on a wait list that could take up to 2 years. I was told to check back in a couple months, which I did and come to find out that nothing changed after 4 months of applying. Talked with a couple other reps from different areas and was told same crap. Took it as in indicator to go back to school.

    OK , I'm confused

I thought you said a degree was a prerequisite to joining the union apprenticeship program

OZ, you are fixating, let it go. The dude is frustrated and is just putting words to screen to help vent. Lets move on. Its okey to not be entirely truthfull on the internet.

I'm not fixated , I thought we were having a discussion

If you aren't being truthful in a discussion , internet , or otherwise , what's the point in participating ?

It just seemed to me that you are spending a bit too much time calling someone out, instead of having a decent discussion. I was kind of liking this thread, education is pretty important, how one gets an education is pretty important, too.

You have done a wonderful job of derailing a decent thread...again.

Uh , the question was raised about trades and trade schooling / apprenticeship , and the poster said that a degree was required to join the apprenticeship program in his area which is different than any of the other apprenticeship progams I have heard of so I asked him about it .

You're really adding to the discussion here , thanks

Not frustrated at all, just posted what happened to me. I talked to union reps and was told only way to ensure an apprenticeship in a timely manner was with a degree, which is what I wrote above in my synopsis.

What I really want to know is assuming this free community college goes through and is paid via tax dollars, what happens to those who flunk classes, its not on their dime so why do they care? Do they just take the classes over, consequently costing tax payers even more $$$$?

I am fine paying for college, in return you learn responsibility. What are you teaching those who are handed things?

Alright no more typing for me, government/political nonsense on forums never turns out well. DAMNIT TW making it hard for me to save money to pay off my debt with all these fancy Mod pictures!

Agree! It seems churches have dodged the taxation bullet forever. I believe the rationale is in order to tax them they would have to be able to have a say in politics and government. If I'm not mistaken I believe they already do....christian churches to be specific. Therefore go ahead and tax them. I don't foresee any real change in government if that were the case.

Here is the thing about college in general. My wife recently completed her MBA. I went over every paper and assignment with her as a proof reader for 2 years. I will tell you and she agrees that there was not one thing of value that she was taught. So, as much as I and many others value higher education, the substance is lacking. I can only imagine how it would be in a "Free" community college.

I would imagine a gpa of at least a 2 would be required for reimbursement. I also think having a degree to get into an apprentice ship is another way of over inflating the importance of a degree. Give a shop math test, an english test and whatever else is needed to see if applicant is worth further investing in.
