That is correct, but the minute the group is organized on tax exempt ground and from the pulpit, then it runs afoul of the separation between church and state.

I can buy a piece of property, organize any peaceful protest or organization and be protected by the first amendment. However, I need to pay taxes on that land and on any income the group generates. A church gives up the right, by being tax exempt as a church, to become a political organization.

But back to education...it has been shown that a well educated population is wealthier and has less social disorder. Therefor, it can be shown that an investment in public education is for the public good.

I have seen some posts here by some individuals who have failed in high school, or in tech school, or in the service. I personally failed in graduate school by only getting a masters in Industrial Engineering and not the PhD, but I am happy and productive at the level I have obtained. However, I don't think we shouldn't offer PhD programs because I didn't complete mine.

And now to quote St. Reagan...a rising tide lifts all boats, and if education can be compared to a tide via allegory form, then if we raise the higher average education, then society as a whole benefits.

My wife and I are fortunate to have good educations, and have done my best to ensure my children get good educations. I hope those who oppose low cost or free community college programs also work very hard to ensure that their children obtain the highest level of education they can obtain. College is not for everyone, but that is why we have different levels of higher education.

    *College Grads
You are describing an an economic issue that falls under one of the definitions of under employment. An individual can be underutilized in their local job market(economy) due to having a higher skill set than in the particular job they hold.
Note - In my experience I have found that regardless of area of study/major, many employers, including myself in the past, will hire a graduate vs non graduate all day. Just having gone to school and obtaining a degree most times speaks volumes in the sense of commitment and discipline.
There are many business owners, companies, individuals that will tell you that after your first job, subsequently no one will care about your major.

Has to be done to pay off Bush's credit card debt. Lest we forget it was razed 9 times during the last administration.

Maybe next we can give free cars to those who can't get to the community college, afterall it wouldn't be right that some could get there and some couldn't.

Good factory jobs is what we need. No college degree required. No struggle to pay off those student loans for non existent jobs.

Some would argue that keeping your population physically fit is an investment in the future because of lowered health costs. Therefore everyone should get a free gym membership and trainer.

I haven't posted but just a couple of times on this thread, preferring to categorize the other posters into my own private profile cubbyholes. As the subject became diversified, my profiling began getting ragged around the edges, with some individuals popping right out of those comfortable little holes, without an apparent place to fit back into. Standing back, looking at the whole picture, it seems we all do value education as a basic right, but we begin to channel into groups when we contemplate who pays, the relative value in the marketplace, and who gets to decide what is taught our children and young adults.

So that everyone is able to have a voice in those critical factors, we have what is known as a Democracy, where all matters of concern can be discussed openly, with logical conclusions rising to the top, visible to all, everyone content in the fairness of that process, after which we can all get a good nights sleep on a full belly of Democracy. Bullshit. It doesn't work that way and never did. The majority rules, which means that some will always go to bed hungry, some will always starve.

What exactly is the majority in our U.S. of A.? Follow the money and you discover the majority. That is the simple fact of Democracy. People don't count, only dollars count. You've heard of the 99% vs the 1%? Who has the majority? The 1% is the majority, of course. We, you and I, we can discuss and argue, and call each other names, but in the end, we all know who we are, what cubbyhole we tell ourselves we belong in. We don't actually have a voice in the discussion unless those dollars are our dollars.

I tried to google a quote from a famous figure out of the past, but could not find it. It went something like this: "Democracy is the worst possible form of goverment, but it is the best form of government there is." That's the one cubbyhole I earnestly hope we all actually fit into. I hope there is a way to make the free Community College proposal work as we would wish it to, but I for one have serious doubts about the legitimacy of the proposal itself, and the ability of our govenment to administer it.

The country relies on a heirarchy of workers and thankfully the education system is composed accordingly. Drop outs, high school graduates, GEDs, associates, trade school certifications, bachelors, masters, doctorates, and other terminal degrees. There are some jobs only obtainable by possessing a certain education. I have a BS so it would be an equally futile effort to apply to university professor or plumber positions. I don't have the proper education for either position. That being said, an associates degree probably opens the FEWEST doors out of all potential levels of education.

In my opinion, a more beneficial impact would be achieved through teaching trades and skillsets.

As for the cost of college; people commonly live beyond their means. Pursuing an education is no different. I chose an affordable public school for my BS because I knew it would be funded primarily through loans. I recently quit my job to return for my masters, and luckily got a graduate assistantship that pays my tuition and provides an additional stipend. I never had a significant scholarship before so this is new to me. Point being, I am a first generation college student and if I can do it, so can you. Hard work, sacrifice, and patience will take you a long ways. I never imagined a college would be cutting me a check after they paid my tuition...but that's where I find myself. Another note; a degree does not equate to a higher pay day. I'll probably make the same amount with a masters as a bachelors, but money isn't my primary motivation. Most of my friends working in the oil field out earn me...and that's great. They've earned it. Don't believe a degree is your ticket to a better pay day. It's very field sensitive.

In 2014 a college grad could expect to make twice the amount of a high school grad. In a perfect world, the college grad should be able to monetarily manage the first years of their lives and pay their debt back.
I remember reading an article approx a year ago and it stated the amount of unpaid educational debt by Physicians and Attorneys is among the highest in the US.

Well some areas do have school buses to get children to school. And some of us might have rode those very buses:)

However, good public transportation also raises the tide. The GOP way of doing things is not to provide transportation to the people, but tax breaks to the auto manufactures and oil companies.

And I have known a great many individuals who have used part of the student loan money to buy and maintain a car...

Conservatives hate educated people, they are harder to manipulate...

Me thinks you have the wrong political affiliation as hating education. That ALL began with a guy named Lyndon Baines Johnson, some just called him LBJ (who was a Democrat and racist). You see, he created what is known today as the welfare state. Please do a little research before stating non-sensical ramblings. Politicians have created a never-ending subclass of people that cannot cope and must be carried by society (fed, clothed, housed, tutored, medicated at taxpayer’s expense their entire lives) and controlled (somewhat) by the police. Why would someone who doesn't have to work want to get an education? You are right, they would NOT want to. Now who consistently tells America that we need to keep people uneducated and living in depressed areas? That's right; Liberals/Democrats. Why not teach them to be independent? Because if/when they get an education, they'll actually LEARN about economics and hard work.

President Johnson actually said (referring to the new Food Stamp Act, Civil Rights Act) the following:

"I'll have those naggers voting Democratic for the next 200 years." *TW autocorrect would not post what LBJ actually said. We all know that the naggers connotation is another word.

    Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/the-relentless-conservative/the-democratic-partys-two_b_933995.html

I'll give you some facts to assist in learning about Democrats:

-1964. The Food Stamp Act (FSA) was signed into law by POTUS Lyndon Baines Johnson (Democrat) appropriating $75 million for 350,000 people in 40 counties and three cities.

-1969. FSA now has 3 million Americans receiving food stamps at a cost of $270 million. When POTUS Nixon left office in 1974, the food stamp program was feeding 16 million people at a cost of $4 billion.

-2009. The cost to taxpayers of the FSA “program” hit $56 billion. The number of recipients and cost of the program continued to soar in 2010. First among the reasons is family disintegration. Forty-one percent of America’s children are born out of wedlock. Among black Americans it is 71 percent. Food stamps feed children abandoned by their fathers. Taxpayers are taking up the slack for millions of deadbeat dads. Dads who are “free” (meaning they don’t have jobs because they have NO parental responsibilities) to roam their communities without morals, values and ethics.

Now help us all on TW understand exactly WHO does not want Americans to be educated? Also, are you aware that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican? In case you were not educated on what he did, he signed this document called the Emancipation Proclamation. You can read about it here:

    http://www.historynet.com/emancipation-proclamation

*Facts/Stats above regarding the FSA derived via the book Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025

Have you checked the cost of a good 4 year collage? They would be doing good to make a dent in the balance in 10 years and still afford a roof over their head. Malpractice insurance for a DR costs far more than their education and their time in collage alone is twice as long. An attorney is another story they study law and know where to find the loop holes we have a Congress full of them. Collage is not for every body, our country is woefully lacking in people that are able to fix and build things and trade schools don't have football teams to pay for ever think how much that adds to the expense of a collage education and does not add one thing to it? Once again the US is lacking in education and we need to pull our thumbs out
