Hey guys, I recently got a letter from toyota that they would provide free undercoating on my 05 for a recall. Up until now,I've been using fluid film and spraying my truck a few times a year. Would this undercoating be better than the fluid film? I'm paranoid about it dry rotting and allowing water between it and the frame.

this is for people who don't already have 3rd party protection

it is not useless, it is a valuable service and if not they wouldn't have written up the recall

But you are not a default setup, you use goo already...and the fluid film would have to be steam-cleaned off anyhow to apply the undercoat

if you do not have rot now due to your fluid film, then you are not going to see a benefit

if you bring it in, all they will do is coat it up and maybe not even cover as much as you do now

if you are a typical owner and do nothing under there, it helps greatly

When I got the letter in the mail about my '02, I took it to the dealer and had it checked out. They did the undercoating without my knowledge. I took a look at it afterwards, and in my opinion they did a terrible job. Sure they sprayed the frame, but also splattered everything around it. I have chrome step bars, and sure enough they coated the backsides of them. It took me a while to clean it all off. It is also annoying to change oil, and any under-the-truck work, because that tar-like substance does not dry. It gets on your clothes and whatever else gets rubbed.

My biggest concern is that they did not clean the frame before spraying. I am worried they trapped a bunch of dirt and grime on the frame when they sprayed it.

I would not have it sprayed in my opinion. I would just take it back to them to check the frame integrity every so often.

O.P. - Just curious what year did you start applying fluid film a few times a year, and how does the frame currently look for rust right now?

I use fluid film twice a year, but haven't really ever seen a frame report from anyone who has been using it consistently for 7 or 8+ years.
