2016 Tacoma engine

as long as they make the 6th gear in the manual higher, im happy. They should have changed it a long time ago. It would have got so much better gas mileage. My 1st gen has a higher 5th gear than the 2nd gen 6th gear.

 

If in fact the dual vvti 4.0 is the "new" motor it will have been about six years since it first came out in the 2010 4runner. That's pretty sad. It should definitely have 300 HP minimum by now if Ford's little pos 3.7L V6 has 300+ hp.

 

Rumors were they would offer a hybrid option. It will be interesting to see, as I don't know how many folks would even be interested.

 

Toy has it on the web now a 3.5 DI V6

The 2GR-FSE is what I'm guessing too. Looks to have 305~315HP with 278ft/lbs torque.

 

Atkinson cycle V-6? Has this been used in any other of Toyota's vehicles?

 

YUP..... 2GR-FXE ... looks like they took the 2GR-FSE and the FXE and mated technologies together.

 

The 2GR-FXE makes 338 HP in the Toyota Crown Majesta and the Lexus GS 450h, that'd be awesome if that's what it makes in the US in the Tacoma!

That 2GR-FXE only operates in Atkinson cycle and is way down on power compared to the 2GR-FSE. (The mentioned 340hp numbers above include the electric motor output.) This engine will operate in Atkinson or Otto cycle as needed like the NX200t and the RC-F UR V8. Look for a big efficiency boost when under light load and should have the goodness of the 2GR-FSE when driving hard. I want to see the actual numbers for the truck tune, though.

Yup and that 2GR-FXE is plagued with problems. Definitely not a quality engine, which makes curious why would Toyota install one.
Usually Tacoma had the same engines as Hilux/4runner/prado since they all the same sizes weight and purpose. Suddenly we get f hybrid engine.

What? No...I have the 1.8 in my Corolla S, and my wife has it in her Prius. The Prius is Atkinson, but the Corolla isn't. My Corolla (2ZR-FE) pulls more HP (132) than the Prius, which pulls 110 base, but pulls 134 total (hybrid). With the 5-speed, my Corolla is a LOT quicker than the Prius, but my mileage is about half that of the Prius (city driving, lead foot).

The torque on the Prius isn't bad off the line initially, but the CVT isn't geared for drag racing. After that first 30 feet, though, the engine revs high as the computer kicks in "power" mode.

If they do hybrid the Tacoma, expect initially lower HP ratings on the gasoline side of the system, but with the right electrical motors it could have a lot of low-end torque.

I just don't know how smart/safe it would be when using a hybrid to pull a boat out of the water. My only hybrid experience is with Prii, and they aren't known for their towing. But the system has been really solid.

The 2ZR-FE in the Corolla runs Otto cycle only. The 2ZR-FXE in the Prius runs Atkinson cycle only. This Tacoma engine can run both Atkinson cycle and Otto cycle. It isn't a 2GR-FE, 2GR-FXE, or 2GR-FSE. It would have the all new VVT tech that those old engines don't have. This Tacoma is NOT a hybrid. You can run the engine in Atkinson cycle without being a hybrid.

 

Well then that will be very interesting indeed. I can see it switching modes - Otto in the city, Atkinson on the highway.

Now to wait for them to keep doing mileage testing for the next six months...
