I don't think Toyota paid any attention to "wannbes". They paid attention to CAFE which is firmly in the drivers seat for mid-sized trucks. If you think this is bad, wait for the 4th gen in ten years when the standards are even more insane (to be honest, I wonder whether the Tacoma will even exist by then give what CAFE says for its footprint).

Probably why the I4 MT was ditched too. With the new 6sp AT it probably beats the MT by 1 mpg on the I4 and they are clawing for every mpg they can get to meet CAFE.

Not that i'm aware of but my expectation is that both engines will closely match output of Colorado/Canyon.

What engine? Pretty sure they haven't released exactly what engine it will be OR the specs on it. So you're not really going on a whole lot here....
I would certainly hope so! :D

This sounds like the engine that already exists in the Lexus IS350, 3.5 liter V6 with Toyota port and direct injection D-4S. That is adapted to take the new Dual VVT-iW, W stands for Wide. Which means the engine can switch between the Otto cyle (typical automotive engine) to the atkinson cycle which is more efficient (typical cycle for hybrid vehicles gas engine).

The direct injection 3.5 liter V6 in the Lexus vehicles creates 306 hp & 277 lb-ft of torque.

I think based on what was described (3.5L, Dual VVT, Atkinson) he's assuming it is the 2GR-FXE.

But that isn't really clear at all, just because they said Atkinson cycle doesn't necessarily mean it is the 2GR-FXE. It could be using Atkinson and Otto cycles at only certain power outputs to improve low power efficiency. As usual it is vague when a marketing guy says "all new" about an engine.

Hah, if the took the locker out of the TRD Off Road that would be a horrible idea. There wouldn't even be a point in anybody buying one.

No locker anymore, its all ATRAC junk now. No way to shutdown Traction either, only dial to select (screwed, stuck, and NO Fin way)
