The Landcruiser (lexus) Prado debuted the 1GR-FE, followed by the 4runner. They had them out for a few years before the first taco got one.

I've got a 2013 Prius and an older Corolla - two versions of the same 1.8. The Corolla is quicker, but the mileage ain't what the Prius is getting.

I'll bet the Corolla isn't as noisy as the Prius either.

    Quote from Autoguide.com

Revealed at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the new 2016 Tacoma will be available with an all-new 3.5-liter V6 Atkinson cycle engine that uses Toyota’s D-4S technology, featuring both direct and port fuel injection. Based on the 3.5-liter V6 in other Toyota applications, the engine is expected to produce roughly 300 HP and 280 lb-ft of torque.

What he said. The 1gr went into the 4Runners, Surfs and LandCruiser Prado's in 2003 up intil 2009 when they introduced the dual vvt-i 1GR

Yes, though it will be somewhat retuned and calibrated to match the new 6sp AT it is paired with. (From the Q&A session)

More to your point, there will be no more 4 cyl manual transmissions at all. 6sp auto only for the 4 cyl. You can get a 6sp manual with the V6 still.

This 3.5l Atkinson cycle is pretty interesting the more I read up on the pros and cons of it. I still kind of disappointed Toyota went the same route as Gm and stuffed a car engine in there truck. But it will be interesting once we have more specs on the engine, I would think they wouldn't want to be to far behind the Colorado's 305hp. If Toyota keeps the same 4 banger that's a big disappointment, for the mpg it gets and its a dog just not impressive compared to the GM 2.5 at 200hp.

Do you know why Toyota went with Atkinson/Otto combo engine? Because the ones with variable displacement/cylinder features makes all sorts of weird vibrations and noises when some cylinders are shut off. Lots of complaints from GM and Honda owners about vibrations, noises, snap crackle & pops.

We'll see what kind of tune they put on it.

There are also some aftermarket performance goodies available assuming it's the same.

I have heard lots of complaints with the variable displacement features as you describe. Gm had a real hard time with it on the previous generation Silverado's.

Its funny how this is the new Tacoma engine thread and the most common words are: Prius, Highlander and Corolla.

Once again, Toyota dropped the ball on the "all new" style and just about everything else. Thanks for the GoPro mount.
