Fun fact: They originally built those as luxury condos and finished construction during the real estate collapse so they decided rather than sell them at a massive loss to rent them out as hotel rooms as part of the Planet Hollywood renovation. The room we stayed in even employees weren't allowed to use because they kept them reserved for high rollers and the ownership group for when they came to town. I was trying to combine our two one-bedroom suites into something bad ass and he said it just worked out timing-wise because a famous person was going to come to stay in it and canceled last minute which was just before we got there so nobody else had a chance to reserve it and we hit the lottery essentially. The dude hooked me up BIG time and if I could buy that room we stayed in I would drop everything here and move to Vegas. The view was beyond epic. I took pictures but they didn't do it much justice and the skyline is even better now but I will see if I can find them to post up.

Yeah we have the whole side, all the bedrooms. It's epic. I have pics but as you stated it does nothing for it. This room is amazing.

So I'm off topic here a bit but I'm considering perhaps doing a rust-proofing/undercoating treatment to my Taco. I'm around Loveland, Fort Collins and Longmont quite a bit and was wondering if anyone has any experience with any auto-body shops in those parts that do that kind of treatment and make it worthwhile. I've read that some people consider it a waste of money but I'm new to the concept so just looking for some direction/opinions on the subject. After all that driving in this snow and collecting road salts and other corrosive crap, I'm getting concerned about the chassis.

    Thanks!

My 96 has never been rust proof coated, and has no rust.
If it's just driving in Colorado, I wouldn't worry about it. The rust is not much of a problem here. We don't use salt here, and it's pretty damn dry here in the summer. Otherwise, I wouldn't know who to recommend.
Rucas did some sort of spray on do-it-yourself application, looks like it coated it pretty well. I can't seem to find the thread on it, hopefully he'll chime in if your interested.

    This is your best defense.

He used Fluid Film, didn't he?

But I'll agree, my 01 has zero rust and still has the stock paint on the frame. I don't think in our dry climate we have to worry about it like some other areas.

I plan on going nuts this spring with a wire brush and some rustoliem to get rid of the rust from the previous owner (I did a bit, but not enough this summer)

I wouldn't trust any undercoating. Wash and wax your rig... that's the best way to prevent rust from taking hold IMO

I've been torn on the fluid film or por15 product but not a concern at the moment for me

Por15 is for after there already is rust... to prevent it from spreading... Fluid Film only helps keep rust from forming... does nothing to prevent the rust that's already taken hold from spreading... AFAIK

    In fact we do.

    Magnesium-Chloride is a salt.

"They" say it doesn't corrode like sodium-chloride but the fact of the matter is mag-chloride oxidizes ferrous materials much the same way sodium chloride.

I don't think it's as aggressive of a reaction but it is indeed a salt coming in contact with steel.

what I just wrote may or may not be completely erroneous

I've never heard of Fluid Film but I'd assume this is something I can pretty easily apply to the truck myself? Mine's only 10 months old so there's no significant rust yet as I'm just trying to prevent it as much as possibe.

And yes I do wash underneath pretty thoroughly and I'm glad that I live in higher altitude as opposed to the coast when it comes to rust control.

I've heard of an alternative solution that road crews can use to melt ice on the pavement, but it's not a salt-based product. They say there's applications that can be used that are non-corrosive to most metals on vehicles. There's a product called "EcoTraction", but don't know much about it. I wonder if parts of Colorado are using other alternatives to road salt. I often see a lot of this salt/sand mixed stuff at intersections and meandering County roads but never been sure exactly what it is.

Well, It's extracted from Dead Sea Brine, so yes, it's a halide. It's also extremely water soluble, so it washes off easy. It will cause corrosion ( more so on concrete believe it or not, a chemical reaction with something in the concrete) if left on the surface but not as quickly as regular salt which dries in a fairly hard crust and is hard to remove from the nooks and crannies in the frame and body.

The key is the water solubility, just wash it off every couple weeks or more.

My comment "we don't use salt here" was more or less meaning that we don't throw down actual rock salt.

Which reminds me... I need to power wash the truck in one of those do-it-yourself doodads.

It's been weeks since I last washed the truck.

I've always contemplated running a hot water faucet to the exterior of my home so I can hook a garden hose up and wash my truck in the winter.

You can hook a hose right to your water heater, that will require gloves to hold the hose though, it's fairly hot.

Or do what I did and get an adapter for your kitchen faucet and then you can select a less scalding temp. Use a hose with a good gasket or better yet chuck the cheap gasket and replace with an O ring. That way if your using a pressure sprayer and set it down to do some hand washing your sink and counter doesn't turn into Sea World.
