Toyota will have to hit CAFE numbers just like all automakers. I think the new 3.5L is a move in that direction and will be adequate. I think the bigger question will be reliability but I wouldn't be AT ALL surprised to eventually see Toyota offer a Hybrid Tacoma.

Good thing Toyota ignores cry babies like BlueT, otherwise we would still have carbureted 4 cyl engines making 90hp.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
No because Tacoma is becoming lifted minivan.

I am surprised how many people want Tacoma to be like Ridgeline, (Comforts, small efficient engine) yet they bought Tacoma when clearly Ridgeline was better option for them.
You dont need frame if you do not tow anything big. In Ridgeline you had leather seats, moonroof and all the rest of the gizmos people want. Not to mention front/rear IFS that made better, more comfortable ride.
So why did you buy Tacoma when Ridgeline was clearly better option for you?
You dont tow, you dont take truck off the shopping mall parking lot. You could have 3.5 L and great ride that matches your purse.
    :D
I get it, you saw all those commercials where people take Toyota trucks to middle of nowhere, and you tought "oh If I can buy truck like that, women will think I am very manly "
    :p

The Ridgeline's gas mileage isn't any better than ours.

There is no replacement for displacement. You are tunning one to a way higher out put. Both engines at the same tune, the bigger one wins. No amount of electronics is going to make a smaller engine ( even .5 liter smaller) make the same torque as the bigger engine at lower rpm.
Horsepower is a derivitive of torque, the higher the same power in the rev band (torque ) the higher the HP reading. No amount of electronics is going to fix that.

So even though numbers aren't confirmed yet. Our 4.0 puts out 236HP / 266TQ. The 3.5L is reported to put out anywhere from 280~310HP / 280 TQ. Not seeing the issue. I'm sure the direct injection has nothing to do with this though.

It isn't that they can't, it is that they feel it is not a good investment. There certainly is a diesel market. But there is also a hot pink truck market too. Nonetheless they don't sell hot pink trucks, not enough people will buy them to justify the cost of setting up the paint booth in the factory. Just because you and two friends want to buy something, and just because another manufacturer has decided to go down that path doesn't make it a good decision.

As to the same price, well right now I'm seeing about $2.00 vs $2.60 which is a 25% spread. Since diesels run only about 25% more efficient to begin with that means the diesel will have no cost savings at all in the US market. And will cost $3K more up front with higher maintenance costs as well. So it is a boondoggle when it comes to efficiency and the customers pocket book.

Now of course there are reasons beyond just efficiency for a diesel, but in the end the diesel really isn't bringing much to the table that a gasoline engine can't for this size of a power plant.

Will the GM sell some diesel mid size trucks? I'm sure they will. Will it prove to have been a useful investment? Hmmmm.... Track record for GM says their engineering and business decisions lead to government bailouts saving them from bankruptcy. I'll put my dollar on Toyota's track record in this case.

It's going to be putting those numbers in at a way higher rpm than the 4.0, so when you take off the line towing something the power just isn't there, it's up at 3 grand on the tack.

This thread makes my head hurt.

No one knows the specs on it yet except Toyota. Let's unbunch our panties and see what they have to say before saying its shit or great. Advances in the design of the combustion chamber, direct injection and the variable valve timing may surprise us. Toyota went this route due to increased regulations and fuel efficiency standards and to drop a V8 into the Tacoma does not meet that criteria. As Chris said before Toyota saw only a .2 mpg gain in efficiency so they have to do something to increase that.

What you or we want as a small enthusiast group doesn't necessarily mean that's what the majority of all the other consumers want. You got two choices. Keep your panties bunched and them chaffing your ass or wait and see what Toyota publishes for numbers.

As for the blower, I wouldn't hold my breathe for one. We are still waiting on one for the 1GR but apparently it failed longevity testing. With the advances in the engine design it becomes more difficult to engineer a long term reliable FI application unless it's already built into the design. I know, I read it on the Internet...

Go look at hp & tq numbers from 5 or 6 decades ago from big V8's & then come back & try that again.
