285/70r17 (59 lbs) to 265/70r17 (45 lbs)

Hello Forum,

I have 285/70r17 BFG A/T "E" (59 lbs) with 7,000 miles on them. I will be towing 4800 lbs (weight with trailer) about once a month on flat lands (Miami, The Keys) except of course when pulling the boat out of the ramp. I've pulled this same boat before with 265/75r16 BFG A/T "E" (54 lbs) and had no issues.

I was wondering if going to 265/70r17 BFG A/T's "C" (45 lbs) would benefit the vehicle when towing and probably all around MPG.

My question is: Will reducing the overall diameter of the tire by 1" & total tire weight by 56 lbs make a noticeable improvement in MPG's & towing driveability?

I assume that it won't affect off road capabilities.

I was always told that reducing rotational weight or just weight in general will help with gas mileage. That is why I'm waiting until March to buy the new KO2 tires in that same size 265/70/17 because they will be "C" rated and a lot lighter than the "E" load tires.

 

For towing I doubt the weight of the tire is going to mater much. But the diameter will matter some. Putting a larger tire on the truck is like changing the gear ratio and that will make towing worse.
