I saw a special on the national news and a big reason they cited was how quiet some of these luxury sedans were. it showed an older person who died after not realizing they left their car on in the garage. still dumb but it happens

You are completely right on this one.

I've driven several push start cars. The first was an S2000, which was obviously a manual. So for those worried about how the button works when you have a manual, at least on the 2000 it required you to put in the clutch if I remember correctly. Which is the same as it is now.

The other I've driven is an MDX. This one is only a pain because if you leave the car while the engine is running to say load a boat. When you walk a certain distance from the drivers seat the car starts to beep. I hope the Tacoma doesn't do this. I see why it needs to make sure an idiot doesn't leave their car running, that's why I hope Oz-T is right, but every time the add a beep an angel doesn't get it's wings.

Do you mean walk away with the smart key IN your pocket? I hope this isn't true, because I like to start my truck up in the morning when it's 0 degrees out to warm up and go back in the house for 15 - 20 mins.

So now we will have to remember to leave the smart key inside the truck or it will shut off on us when warming up in the morning? I would hope it's an option that could maybe be turned off though the dealer.

Just don't be away for longer than 10 minutes. How long does your truck take to warm up?

On the MDX if you have the fob thing in your pocket and get out. When you're about 4 - 5' from the back the car will start beeping and it is pretty loud. So what I end up doing is just leaving the fob in the cupholder.

On the same note it always freaks me out that the fob may get wet (there are times it may get really really wet, in our boat).

That was my thought too. Wonder why they let the DC hood open for pictures and not the AC?
Funny that in the video the driver popped the hood when he was crawling out thru the window.

The difference is that with the push button you never need to get the key out to start, so now you will have to remember to get the key out and leave it in the vehicle if you want to leave it running. When you forget, you'll need to run back outside in the freezing cold to start the vehicle up again. Also how does this affect people with remote starts?

When it's near 0 degrees, it takes longer than 10 minutes to warm up the truck and defrost the ice on the windshield. I'm not saying anything positive or negative about the push button, just trying to think through how it will affect me. I assume the auto shut off of the truck can be disabled somehow, I would hope at least.

I think I would like the push button as long as the auto shut off feature could be disabled somehow.

You ever consider remote start or a block heater ?

I know the remote start on a Chevy is 5 minutes. When I was traveling for work I would rent the Equinox in Wisconsin and Washington. Go to window, start car. 5 minutes later, go to window, restart car. I'd then go eat breakfast, and restart the car on the way back to the room. By the time I got to the Equinox it was ready to go.

all this no lock inside is fine, but I physically like to turn the key.... ive seen some chrystlers have the key fob and part of it inserts into the ignition and then you turn it.
