Oh ok. I didn't know that as detonation wire. Now I'm curious why you'd carry a quarter mile of that.

Det wire is the same thing we used for the old field phones. It's just copper wire coated in earth tone plastic. Think speaker wire. Also det cord, and many other high order explosives, are not illegal if you fill out some paperwork. Like anything it's a tool unless used by a fool. (I come from a family of miners)

Still seems a little unnecessary to keep in your truck no?

For me, no. I think it's a smart thing to pack around. You could use it for lots of trail repairs, kinda like you would use 550 cord and duct tape (that shit is tough, we once hung a full grown PFC in his sleeping bag from a tree limb with just a couple strands) and for the obvious use as electrical wire. In a grid down situation you would need a lot of that to run DC voltage around...

I remember seeing something in the news a while back about how according to an FBI/DOJ flyer keeping more than a week's worth of food on hand makes you a terror suspect.

For the younger folks who may not know (without getting political), this ideology is only about 5 years old.

Many years ago, it was considered the right thing to do - to be prepared for any situation that may happen. You would be considered a Patriot to be prepared. (Remember the Civil Defense shelters during the Cold War?)

@ n.gardner: There is a little confusion going on here between two TOTALLY different things,.....the wire you used and are thinking of for field phones was commo wire. The other, incorrectly refered to as det wire, is actually called detonation cord, or more commonly called det cord. Det cord does not have any copper or any other type of wire in it. Det cord is used to wrap around c4 explosives or dynamite to detonate them, it is often used to connect a series of several charges in different close proximity locations to detonate at same time (daisey chain). It has other uses also, like putting several wraps around trees to fall them and make obstacles/roadblocks. Very useful stuff.
If anyone has det cord in their truck then they would definitely be very wrong/illegal!

Exactly. It used to be normal and encouraged to keep food and water on hand for at least a week. Now it's shunned.
Frankly, I don't understand how anybody who's watched the Fed bungle the post-Katrina and post-Sandy recovery efforts can NOT keep food and water on hand, regardless of public opinion or federal nonsense. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I didn't have at least a couple weeks worth of supplies.

Bullshit. It is NOT ILLEGAL. You just have to fill out some forms to get it, and if you have over a certain amount in the truck, proper hazmat label and license, as well as a "magazine" (bunker) to store it in at the work site. Det cord is very safe and difficult to set off. If it was illegal how would anyone blast for construction, mining, demolition, etc? Not illegal. Just like with a firearm, you can do illegal things with it, but if used as intended not illegal. Det WIRE is used to run circuits between charges touched off by blasting caps. It is very similar to commo wire.

@username......First of all there is no need to get yourself all worked up/hostile, we are just having a discussion. For your sake I will clarify and expound on something I previously didn't think I had to. When I said det cord was illegal to have I meant that it IS illegal for an "average joe citizen" to have and carry around in his privately owned vehicle/truck as part of his prepping/survival kit......now OF COURSE construction and demolition businesses can legally possess det cord for their work with all the proper documents, storage criteria, etc. etc.
    So,.... yes you are right.
