Seems like the overall consensus on the gen 3 is negative. Not across the board but speaking generally, I have seen more negative opinions than positive on the gen 3 (or as I like to call it, the Gen 2.2).
And while MPG and engine specs are TBD it seems Toyota is just getting lazy this decade.
Toyota cites emissions regulations as the reason why there will be no diesel. Okay... then why is Chevy/GM offering a diesel? Why is Nissan seriously playing with the idea of putting a baby Cummins in their next Frontier? Well, because they want market share and are willing to match what customers want. Toyota wants to slash R&D costs as much as possible and milk profits from the 2005 Tacoma.
I don't think Toyota will lose sales king in the near-future but they are absolutely going to lose market share, especially after the Duramax is released and new Frontier hits the market. Oh, and let's not forget Honda making a "normal looking" pickup slated for release in the next year too.
Toyota, I held onto my '02 for years hoping for something better. Now I am seriously considering jumping ship. I am just one of many. :(

Idk what the deal is, I love it so far but that's basing it off looks alone. If it performs well then what is not to like? Cosmetics?

I disagree. I'm buying one using my dealership's first open allocation. Many others feel the same way. We just aren't as vocal in our pleasure as the unhappy are in their displeasure.

That said, everyone is willing to vote with their feet.

    Demand change by changing demand.

    Only time will tell.

    Hindsight is 20/20.

A penny saved is a penny earned. Whatever.

Look back at when the Ridgeline and Avalanche first came out. How much did the market really change over time? Market share is an amorphous thing. They may have lost you and many other loyal Tacoma fans, but how many former SUV drivers are they going to gain?

It's been 3 friggin' days since the full reveal, and we still don't have all the specs. Let's give it a few months before starting antidepressants.

When I'm in the market for a truck, I'll be looking HARD at ALL the options and picking the best one.

Whether that's the Tacoma or not we'll have to wait to see!

I'm pretty sure most people will be doing the same thing.

    Only time will tell...

Don't lose sight of the fact that each Tacoma gen goes on for a number of years and evolution continues. The next new model is never the final and ultimate and change on your cash cow vehicle is usually incremental (if you ignore the aluminum F-150).

    But no mud flaps? Unforgivable.

The only issue I see in the 3rd gen as far as looks go is that Toyota pretty much recycled the 2nd gens cab body. Not saying it looks bad, but that's probably why everyone is saying the truck looks like a refreshed 2nd gen. On the mechanical side the new V6 seems promising, but I am disappointed that Toyota isn't offering a small V8 as an option. I know Toyota is concerned about efficiency and sales in the marketplace, but I'm sure many customers such as myself don't care about the gas prices and would love to have a V8 in their Tacoma.

There was no way Toyota was gonna offer a V8. I don't know people keep hoping for that. GM tried that with the 5.3 Colorado and it was a dud.
Toyota is just being lazy and resting on laurels. Whereas Ford continues to lead by example and innovate, Toyota is just going through the motions.
The new Frontier Diesel should be a solid choice.

Penny saved a penny earned? Alright in theory, but Toyota will no doubt raise the price across the board for a truck designed in the mid-2000's.

People like to complain. First they complain that something needs to change, everyone agrees that something must change. That's all they agree on though, they all have different ideas of what needs to be changed. So when the change finally comes all the people previously complaining about the need for change switch to complaining about the actual changes that happened.

The internet is good for complaining. So on the internet no matter what it looks like people don't like it...

Not that anyone cares, but I actually think on the whole the 3rd gen seems fine. Not a fan of the styling but it appears all the brands are going with a similar look, so OK. Engine not many details, but about what I'd expect given what CAFE says has to happen. Kept and enhanced some of the off-road features the Tacoma is renown for. Didn't make it much bigger at all (hurray). Curious about curb weight, chance it is slightly lower based on what they discussed in Q&A. Seems like they left the good parts alone, enhanced what they could, and did to the drive train what Uncle Sam said they had to.

That said, I'm likely getting a 2015 not because I don't like the 2016 but because I'm totally happy with the 2015, need to purchase soon, and need aftermarket stuff available quickly. If this was two years from now and I was looking at the 2017/2018 I'd be perfectly happy buying the 3rd gen.

I just threw that in there to make fun of myself for all the other aphorisms I genned up. Didn't expect it to be taken seriously.

The thing is the mid-sized segment is set to heat up big time. A Frontier Cummins diesel option, a new Frontier, new Honda, new Duramax, and who knows maybe Chrysler and Ford will re-enter segment.
If Toyota is just gonna offer up re-sized V6 with marginal improvements, they better keep the price competitive.

Nissan Frontier with a Diesel engine would be nice but unfortunately I owned an Infiniti and that thing was a POS. My take is that Nissan makes crappy cars and trucks. The big 3 American companies build more reliable cars and trucks when compared to Nissan. Just my opinion.

The Frontier Diesel will probably be a Cummins, which is a stand alone American company doing the mechanicals. Not Nissan themselves.

and the whole "Whelp, I owned Brand X back in the 1980's and it was a POS and it since it was a POS then everything else by Brand X must also be a POS because whatever happens to me is what happens to EVERYONE" mentality is BS. That is why there are quality surveys that show macro trends.

I didn't elaborate much, yes the engine would be bulletproof. However, I was speaking of other issues such as the instrument cluster lighting up like a Christmas tree every couple weeks or other electrical problems. My BMW's didn't give me that many problems. Also had a neighbor with a maxima and a friend with an Armada which both had reliability issues. I just have a genuine hatred towards Nissan vehicles. Nothing they do will make me jump ship.

Read above post, and no it wasn't the 80's hehehe it was late 2000's to most recently as 2012. It's just junk in my opinion and I am entitled to my opinion as you are entitled to yours.

Oh i know. I just see tons of people say "Well, my buddy had a Toyota and it had a problem, so I know they're shit" all the time. Just funny is all. As if one isolated incident describes them all.
