I think this new Tacoma definitely makes the new 4Runner much more attractive to me. I could see myself buying an new 4Runner eventually, and keep the 2nd Gen Tacoma converting it into a trail rig at that time. Maybe also get a used trailer that I could tow with either one.

Is this 'new' 2016 really considered a 3rd gen? Looks like the same body with a 3rd revision of face-lifts AKA 2nd Gen Tacoma V3.0

If GM had not released the new twins, Toyota would have been content to keep selling the 2nd Gen as is, and would still sell every one they make. I am disappointed in the lack of a diesel engine (but I understand the logic why they chose not to), but more disappointed in the general "warmed-over" feel of the 3rd Gen. They act like the GoPro mount is some sort of technological advancement that gives them credibility, and having the stiff suit introduce it at the press conference was lame. I might still buy one in the next few years, but I would like to see what Nissan comes up with.

My take. Exteriorly, same truck. Put them side by side and anyone can tell they are the same truck except for the grill, tailgate, and other minor cosmetic changes. The limited is uglier than Gary Busey's balls, but the access cab looks good. Now the engine may be new, but that doesn't mean it is better or on par. One thing that gets me. 3rd gen Tacoma 3.5L-~270hp/ 2010+ 4runner 4.0-~270. 3rd gen Tacoma 3.5L MPG-IDK. 2010 4runner 4.0-~21. Hmmm. Another thing. Why not more horsepower than that? Ford has a 3.5 in the new Raptor making more than 400hp. Chevy Colorado puts out 305. Can I say the D word? Diesel? I'm glad they put some features from the FJ into the truck, and that GoPro mount is gonna be a hit with the Russians. Overall: Meh

Yeah, the new Raptor has a 3.5L. That is, literally, the only common thing between the two motors. Raptor is twin-turbo charged V6. While the V6 in the Tacoma will not receive the same treatment nor was it built for the same consumer... of course the Raptor makes more hp.

Horsepower? Who gives a hell about that. The only thing horsepower is good for is to keep you moving forward. The most important thing, particularly on a truck which has some weight on it, is the get up and go on it, which is torque. The higher the torque, the better. Also, weight distribution and power to weight ratio is a huge role which the Tacoma seems to have a good amount of. It's a peppy truck for a V6.

The video of the truck on Cnet was just posted up a while ago. Here is what I wrote in another thread and what I noticed by some quick shots of it:

    Tacoma2016_zps37a80bb8_ca8703c6762fea8e11c35af2c8f59c0714977696.jpg

Same split front mounted/rear mounted shock mounting, same U-bolts, U-bolt plates, same inverted shackles, hell, if my counting is correct, it even appears they are using the same shit 4 pack TSB leaf springs!! Obviously Toyota doesn't give much of a shit about actually improving suspension. Supposedly though, it's a much "smoother" suspension. My ass it is. It looks like this "3rd gen" is going to have the EXACT same issues that the 2nd gen suffered from. Axle wrap during braking and definitely harder braking, as well as spring sag within very short order, unless at least AAL's are added on. Talk about a quality improvement huh?

It looks to me like the lines from the top versus the bottom are the same. hopefully there is a plan in the future for a facelift from gen3 to gen4 like 05 from 12

Oh don't worry...it will grow on everyone.

When the 2nd gens came out, there was the same dislikes & complaints. Yadda yadda yadda...bla bla bla....

As soon as the 3rd gens come out, and some folks actually buy them and start talking about them on this forum...it'll be nothing but jealousy!

Pure jealousy!! They won't admit it...but yup.... You bet! :D

The point was that other companies have made impressive power with small engines, utilizing what they could. Why hasn't Toyota made moves to offer more performance upgrades such as the turbo, or maybe exhaust upgrades, anything.

It appears so. The top mounting design should be the same stud into bracket, and eyelet into lower bracket design. With the leaf springs, pick your poison on brand, and whether you will be doing AAL or a whole new spring pack.

The problem is. This truck will cost $36,000+ for an OR, Sport, and Limited if you get it fully equipped. For the people wanting to leave their trucks stock, why in the hell should you have to worry about the leaf springs on what Toyota is claiming a "smoother, better suspension?" It's honestly BS and inexcusable at this stage in the game. They have been making this same 2nd gen style for over 10 years now. If you are giving it a full makeover, why not go the extra simple step to give it a few, better revisions for what is KNOWN to be a problem to thousands of their current customers?

If you want a 500hp V6 Tacoma look no further then your imagination because it will never happen :). I assume you know the HP/TQ numbers since you seem a bit disappointed with the 3.5L V6 numbers. Please tell us Im curious

My thoughts exactly. I could do without the gimmicky electronics, seat heaters that are super easy to add, or go pro mount (wtf?). They could have put that money into better frame coatings, thicker paint, better leaf springs, etc.

This generation will probably make me think a lot more about never selling my 2nd gen (converting to trail rig eventually) and looking at a 4Runner or mid-size SUV as my next daily driver.

everyone step away from the keyboard.... take a deep breath.

tell you what, when you get the ACTUAL FACTS about what has been done, and better yet, get some real world driving data....

then you can whine all you want. for now - let's all just calm down a bit.

x2 about looking into a 4runner. Hell, x2 on everything you just said. Lmao. It's a much better platform for both wheeling and daily driving alike.

Toyota could had sunk their development into much better mechanical improvements to make an already solid truck with a few problems out of the gate into a total bulletproof, maintenance free (well, almost) generation, but no. They caved when it really mattered and did what all the american manufacturers do. They add bells and whistles and creature comforts while cheaping out on what really matters.

Don't get me wrong. The new interior is damn nice! Is it something I really care about, and about 90% of the midsize buying truck segment cares about? No. We bought the truck to either work, or play, or maybe a little bit of both. We don't NEED interior gimmicks, we NEED mechanical reliability from the gate.

Lol, I'm calm and it's not whining. I'm just stating what I see and what I think about it. Look at the picture. It's worth a thousand words and very telling of what the rear end is like. It appears to be an exact carbon copy of the current gen rear end down to the brake line routing, and shock mounting. If I wanted real world driving data and facts, I'd look at MPG. I'm pointing out the rear end, not the truck overall, and unless my eyes deceive me, the 4 pack TSB leafs is what I see on the limited model, as well as the same inverted shackles in current usage on 2nd gens. Same Spring Over Axle setup and all.
