If I could get a no BS 28 highway unloaded in a V6 doublecab long bed prerunner, or 25 in 4X4 version of same, I would really take notice and maybe consider not driving my current truck until it disintegrates into a pile of dust.

I think toyota will show 1-2 mpg gains and trumpet this like they just invented time travel.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Given that i drive about 25k a year, if they improve a combined 4-5 mpg and keep the other ratings (towing, hp, tq) as good or better I would be willing to switch. But they have to post numbers before the end of summer or I will be in a 2015 for years to come! The only reason I am going to get rid of my 13 is for the family, I need to get a DC..

The EPA fuel economy estimates for the Chevy Colorado weren't released until a few weeks before they started appearing at the dealers. Based on that I wouldn't expect any official numbers until like August or September. Maybe toyota will release them sooner but I don't see why they would want to. They'll be stuck with them for the next 10 years.

That said, with the colorado V6 4x4 is rated at 17/24 so I'd expect the equivalent toyota to be 18/25.

The real question is what is the 6spd going to be rated? I love my 6spd but it is just not capable of the same.. or even close to the mpg I could get when I had the 2012 auto.

Agreed - All the guys at work that drive Rams and F150's aren't getting anywhere close to the EPA numbers and they drive it easy.

My 2014 Ford FX4 F-150 V6 Ecoboost gets 17mpg (best) with no weight and not towing anything. This is real world driving the limit etc etc..

    Hmmmm...

Assuming the "new" engine is a variant of the 2GR-FSE...the Lexus GS 350 gets 21/28 city/hwy mpg with 306hp/277ft-lbs and the 8sp auto. AWD version with 6 spd auto is 19/21/26mpg. (I will ignore the 2GR-FXE since it's in all hybrid configs.) That's a ~3800lb or ~4000lb car with (assumed) lower rolling resistance and lower drag than a truck. I will guess the new Tacoma is ~4200bs in a double-cab short bed. Small penalty for weight on the 2GR-FSE puts us at 18/25 mpg. Adding back in let's just guess +10% for Atkinson improvements under low(er) load, that's maybe 19/28 mpg. That is certainly too good to be true (but I would love to be wrong). So, probably need to assume some additional penalties for truck-y gearing, resistance/poorer aero, and regular gas instead of premium, plus I bet they will tune the engine for extra torque and it'll cost some mpg. (I bet that b/c the tach redline looked like 6000rpm in the photos and the 2GR-FSE in the GS 350 is 6600rpm)

    Soooo, I vote...

    Worst case: 17/20/25
(Toyota puts emphasis on power and just squeaks by Canyon in highway mpg by leveraging Atkinson updates)

    Likely: 18/21/25
(Enough to beat Chevy/GMC and then do the best they can on beating power)

Never Gonna Happen But I wish: 19/22/27
(Atkinson magic, aero tricks, super tall 6th gear, and I sacrificed a goat)

I don't know shit about this stuff, just guessing. But if the new engine is an Atkinson-equipped/modified 2GR-FSE, based on how heavy the GS350 is and it's mileage, I think there's good mpg potential for the new Taco. Hopefully the torque comes out good too (and low enough) to make everyone happy.

    based on the current

    4runner of 17/21

    and

    Tacoma of 16/21

    very true.
lowest I got was 8mpg towing and 13mpg on the highway with no tow and little gear for a tank fill.
they all lie and just blow smoke.....

If Toyota can't get 30 mpg's out of the 2.7 in a mid-sized truck, they will be the laughing stock of the truck world. Can you imagine the commercials Dodge could produce? I use my truck as a work truck daily, regularly haul 1000 pounds in it. I do not tow a trailer with it, don't need 300 lbs of torque. I need mpg's. Come on Toyota, give us real world users what we need, let the aftermarket take care of the boys who use their trucks for toys. Bring it.

If I could get 22 MPG on the highway in the 2016 Tacoma, I'd be happy. As I only get 16-19 depending on the time of the year in my 2002 4runner, that would be a good increase.

    I'm betting 20city/27hwy/23 overall.

"regularly haul 1000 pounds in it"

I don't think your smart ass comment that's been said a million times on this forum is funny nor will it allow him to tow or haul what he needs. He's right if toyota wants to compete with the big boys they need to step up their mpg ratings.

A recent picture, of my work truck, on a predator hunt in southern Colorado. 2000 mile round trip. A few more mpg's would be great Toyota!

Toyota only cares about stellar MPG figures on their cars, not trucks. They can offer the current Tundra and Tacoma that get crappy mileage because their Prius lines boosts their overall fleet mpg.
They also know more people will still buy a Tacoma even if it gets worse MPG than the Colorado because of reputation, QDR etc. I predict 19 city, 23 highway. That's a substantial improvement but still enough to upset most on this forum.

I know the 1GR-FE 4.0 is old, not sexy, and doesn't get the greatest MPG - but it is pretty near god damned bullet proof. I've been driving one for 4.5 years and I'm convinced I can drive it for 10+ more if I want to. Now before everyone jumps my shit - yeah a little more power would be nice and if my truck got 20+ mpg combined I would drive it until it disintegrated (the way gas prices are going I probably still will). But the extra power and mpg comes at a cost - and not just $ costs. I'm not anti improvement - but I'm more than happy to let others help the manufacturers work out turbo problems and reliability issues. I understand that my opinion would be different than someone who put a lot more miles per year on their truck or used their vehicle significantly different than I do - but I'll take the engine that gives me 17 mpg combined (I rarely tow or haul any significant weight) for 200K miles over one that give me 20 mpg for ??? miles. Proceed.
