I ended up not buying a new rack and going to try and rebuild it myself. I started to pull my old one off to see what failed and made it start leaking yesterday. I had trimmed the stock boots to fit over the clevis for heim steering and the leaking side in particular had torn. Sure enough when I pulled it, it was full of sand. Now my question is, should I get new boots and install them when I repair/replace the the rack or just leave it without?

Did you only notice it in that parking spot? If you have a spool or even a locker and pull into a spot like that it can bind up and stay twisted like that.

what is everyone running for tires these days? I have had two projects pop on me in the last month or so. both on the sidewall. any thoughts on a good tire to run for an all around tire thats good for sand, dirt, and mud.

Might get flamed for this here, but pro comp "extreme" all terrains.

They're halfway between AT and MT. Never torn a sidewall; torn sidewalls with other brand tires. Good tread wear, tolerable noise level, and great performance in sand, mud, and snow.

Just ordered a set in 35''.

Really happy with my MTR's. Of the 5 or 6 types of tires I've had they are by far my favorite.

Nitto Trail Grapplers in load range E. What PSI were you running on the projects? My Baja's are built on the same carcass and have been bulletproof at 25psi.

Could be that too. I guess if its fixed though could be many little things.

    The Ford clap....lol

I love the MTR/Ks. Best offroad tire available IMO traction wise. Good side walls too.

Not projects that's for sure ha. My two favorite tires are 1) the BFG KM2 mudders 2) the Goodyear MTR Kevlar

i just installed a "new" rack today in my tundra it was packed with grease underneath the boots. i didn't run boots on the last rack, and the atf leaking out it was black with dirt.

i can't imagine being without grease and subject to dirt is helping with the life of these seals, but at the same time, once the boot tears (which it inevitably will because of the clevis), it might hold in additional dirt that might not stick without a boot in the first place?

who knows but i'm giving a boot a try, it can't hurt as long as it doesn't rip. i'm interested to see if you end up being able to rebuild the rack though
