I keep hearing Toyota talk up the fact the new Tacoma will have more HP, more MPG, but I have not heard them mention torque. Wondering if maybe torque will be slightly less or the same just more MPG and HP. Here is one video I was talking about.

Torque is probably gonna be the same as today.

    2GR-FSE in IS350 gets 277 lb-ft on 91 octane.

    Single-VVTi 1GR-FE in 2007-2009 FJ gets 278 lb-ft on 91 octane.

Atkinson engines aren't known to have good low to mid range torque... so it'll be interesting to see how Toyota will address this on the new engine. With hybrids, the electric drivetrain can compensate..

^The engine in the new Taco runs in simulated Atkinson cycle at partial throttle/cruise. At full throttle it runs in conventional Otto cycle. Basically very aggressive valve timing variation with VVTi. The V8 in the Lexus RC-F already does this.

I don't recall where but I remember someone here mentioning that Toyota plans to have the highest torque per lb in the segment.

I can see that happening. The 3rd gen is said to be lighter than the 2nd gen, which is already the 300-400 lb lighter than the Frontier and Colorado.

I have not heard that from them. I guess 278 ft/lb of torque would best the Colorado by a smidge and improve from the 4.0 a bit...

I expect large increases in all 3 numbers.

Keep in mind 278 lb-ft for 1GR is on 91 octane. The 2016 Taco being more mainstream will probably be tuned for 87 octane, so torque will probably be the same as today - 266 lb-ft. Enough to break the tires loose on dry pavement, so it's considered sufficient.

With the two different injection systems it will be interesting to see how and when the new v6 makes its power. And the heater vents look more like the ones in our yaris, which I like because the are almost infinitely adjustable and simple should there be an issue.

Interior designer was rumoured to be a huge Short Circuit movie fan.

I think while most people understand HP a lot of people do not understand or look at torque.

My prediction for hp and torque will be very similar numbers to the Twins. The truck may be a little lighter than the Twins not much more than 100-150#. Fuel consumption numbers will also be very comparable. The only reason to buy the 4 cylinder will be the price of admission.
