Savage makes a very accurate rifle, with not so great stocks (sometimes) and not so great triggers (sometimes). Remington is exactly the same. The only difference is Remington is the small block chevy of the gun world, and so 99% of the time the two get compared, Remington wins.

I'd buy whatever felt good in your hands, then I'd (likely) buy a reasonable scope that'll do the job well (like the Super Sniper I linked to above), good base and scope rings to get the most out of my setup and go shooting.

I have a 700 with a factory fiberglass stock. Came free floated from the factory.

As mentioned above, mine shoots minute-of-hand consistently at 200 yards with a $100 Bushnell scope. Since in Maine the tree cover's thick enough that you're not likely to get many shots further out than that anyway it's good enough for me. I'm likely not a good enough shot to take full advantage of anything more accurate than that at long distances anyway, so I don't see the need to customize mine for 1000 yard shots.
If I lived somewhere with flatter country and fewer trees I'd be all about it, though, since I like a challenge. Especially if it improves practical skills.

    :)

Is a Scout rifle like a GSR or maybe even a lever gun better suited for 200 yards and thick trees? If you were buying only one rifle to hunt with, 700 again?

    geeez.....
One rifle to hunt with for the rest of my life?!

    Bah.

At this moment in time it'd be a Ruger Gunsite Scout.
308, so a good caliber for distance shooting
Short overall length so it's handy in the thick stuff
308's not too expensive to plink with (yet)
Equipped w/rail so you can fit a variety of scopes & sights on it.
Optional 10-round mag for possible defensive purposes.
Reviews that I've read on it say that it's incredibly accurate for a short-barreled gun.

But, ask me again next week and it might be a Browning BLR :notsure:

Mason I've considered that but the things that already light up on the dash look nice. When you add LEDs for full time driving and can see stuff like the glovebox and AC controls, it looks kind of tacky to me. If they're not always on, they cool. Putting them in a lot of convenient places than having them go to one switch would be awesome for getting stuff quickly at night and you don't have to blind yourself with map/dome.

PR good point, I should have caught on.

The glovebox light has a magnetic switch that it turns on only when the glove box is open. And the under headunit lights have buttons to turn on, turn off, switch colors, and dim.
