Show off your Cooper ST Maxx

I'll tell you from experience,
Coming from the BFG AT's these are a much better tire in all conditions that I have driven with them(snow, wet, pavement, ice and gravel roads)

Got the Maxxs installed last Monday, today is Friday. It's been so damn cold around here that it hardly wants to snow, even in lake-effect territory; therefore unable to provide a sufficient snow-handling report at this time. But in comparison to the horribly torn-up and wore out Big Foots that I had, there is considerable more over-steer than before, most likely because the BFs were shot. I was always pushing the front end. The Maxxs are so much more nimble, gotta love new tires. They are also very quiet on the highway... all whoosh, no hummm.
I will say one thing about the 2nd gen Tacoma though, in the little bit of snow that I've had to play with this week, there is still some hesitance on the front end wanting to bite in and turn when you crank the wheel. With the new tires, the hesitance is subdued, but still present. And once you get it sideways, the Tacoma doesn't mind staying that way, and actually quite drive-able. I had a 1st gen before my 2nd, and that was the first handling difference that I noticed. Not sure if it has something to do with the spacers on the front suspension though - the truck was like that when I bought it used.

Winter Review:

I have had the stock tires in the winter, as well as MTR's. These surpass both tires for on road driving. We recently had a blizzard where the highway was completely covered, and driving felt a lot more safe and in control, compared to the other tires. I was able to get to highway speed without fishtailing during this blizzard. Though the speed for the conditions was much slower than highway speeds (60-80km/h), it was nice to know I had the traction to get out of a situation if the need came about. In terms of braking on snow covered road, ABS didn't get as much of a work out as my other tires I had. During this blizzard, I didn't need to use 4x4 at all, where my other tires I would have to use it.
(I have no weight in the bed during winter, only my armor could be considered as weight)

Haven't had the opportunity to get the tires in deep snow, but probably predict the tires wont do as well as the MTR's just based on the overall design of each tires. Time will tell though.

All in all very happy.

Tire size: 255/85/16 E tire
Pressure: 35psi in all tires (haven't had a chance to do chalk test since install)

Yea I gotta get mines balanced and rotated. Clocked 7k miles on then and still running strong. Haven't seen any signs of wear. Taking my rig in some snow tomorrow, will update on it

 

No sweat. I have been very happy with them. Definitely regained some confidence driving on the highway again during some harsh weather. Never want to be going sideways up hill on the highway ever again lol.

 

im thinking about grabbing a pair of the cooper st maxx in 285/70/17 but i saw tread depot only carried them in white lettering. I was wondering on the white lettering tires are both sides white letters and if not can i have the side without white lettering facing out?

 

Only one side is white, you can have them out the white on the inside...

Figured I'd add a pic from an adventure in the snow. The ST MAXX's did great for the most part. Packed ice was a bit sketchy, but I don't know of any tire that inspires confidence on packed ice. Well... non studded that is. lol

I'd be cautious on the weight given online...
They 255/80/17 were 51lbs and the cooper rep told me they were 59lbs...

He could be wrong though too...

 

Cooper told me the same thing. All the weights that i checked for their tires were wrong.

 

I wished I could have weighed them first...
I wonder who's weight is right?

Next time I rotate them I'll weigh them and subtract my wheel weight

 

Never been a fan of studded tires... For the few days where they would be nice I'd rather just slow down.

 

Every weight i checked against treaddepot was wrong. Cooper said they all weighed more. Cooper most publish bad numbers. Even my local cooper dealer had the same weights as treaddepot, which is much lighter than they really weigh.

 

Ok, so it must be just Cooper.
