I actually reached out to a couple dealers to see about selling back my truck instead of doing the frame replacement after seeing that. Apparently Toyota will only do that when someone owns it (ie, not a dealer) so I still need to go through with it, THEN trade it like any other used vehicle.

So much for that idea. Makes me wonder if they've made enough improvements to warrant me getting one instead of a Tundra or Titan. Need just a little bit more towing capacity, but really disappointed with Toyota quality and customer care of late. Debating on upsizing at the same time if I'm going to trade it. :notsure:

I know a guy who has these here in our area. Wants $200 for the pair.

I'm all settled in and just chilling... literally! I'd be willing to drive a few hours... maybe more if there was overnighting involved.

That's a stupid question, we here on TW don't judge on your vehicle choice. Whatever you want to drive you drive it.

LMAO I figured I might hang around for a bit.

I'm just frustrated. Not feeling the "Toyota quality" anymore. My 4th Toyota, they all burned oil.
    • bumper rusted out (replaced)
    • tailgate rusted out (still sourcing parts)
    • rear locker has a hole corroded in it and the internals seized (may have that fixed once I tweak it on a warm day)
    • Timing cover leaking oil ($420 to fix with $15 tube of sealant)
    • Must be burning oil as I'm getting P0430 (and now P0420) codes like previous two cars. Cats are too expensive to replace, bypass chip didn't work, finally did the non-fouler trick for now to bypass NYS inspection BS. If that stops working I'm looking at $1600+ per bank to replace them, dealer cost.
    • Temp gauge/compass stopped working again. And why the fuck am I piecing circuits back together in a $30,000 truck?!?
    • Wife's Rav4 burned oil, had P0430 code, and each time it randomly popped up VSC, CC, and 4WD turned off. A company turning off 4WD and traction control systems over an emissions code on a car sold in snow country doesn't inspire confidence in their engineers. Makes me wonder about the newer Tundras and Tacomas with even more electronic crap. At least the Nissans I've looked at had the option to turn that off so you knew shit was off, and drove accordingly vs relying on it and having it go off unexpectedly.

And frankly I need a bigger truck. A little more power to get my trailer up to speed. It's only a 5x10, but it has an 8ft 3x4 3/8" thick steel beam in the tongue now to extend it 2ft to give me more room for the loader on my tractor. My Taco now struggles a little with it, and only supports the tongue because I have rebuilt springs that take 800lbs in the bed to sit level. If not for those, I'd be on the bump stops with OEM springs. The front discs are probably doing most of my braking, and while it works I would prefer more braking power towing down the mountains around here. The Titan has 4 wheel disc, 310 HP, 550lbs of torque, 6.5 or 8 ft bed, stronger tie down rails (P shaped bracket, 2 rows of bolts holding it to the bed), forged aluminum cleats (no plastic shit to break like ours), built in bed lights (2 under each side rail), and just seems built better on paper. :notsure:

Damn... That's sucks. Yeah I could see where your frustrated.
If I needed to tow anything I wouldn't have my Tacoma. Just not enough power and that was obvious when I purchased. I knew I didn't need to tow anything over 4k but it does make me nervous that if I purchase a boat that I may have to trade :(
I'm hoping the boat I purchase will be too big to trailer anyway and I'll just leave it in the water :D

Also, I bought this truck with the intention of trail riding. I haven't been on a trail in over a year, and even then the ones we went on were handled by stock trucks.

Now I do more towing with my tractor, hauling hay for the animals, furniture, etc. Having an 8ft bed is really tempting. Nissan has D rings in all 4 corners of the bed, I had to add 4 to the taco. Some of them are rusted out now, and I'm afraid to attempt getting the bed bolts out to replace them. (They're already listed as parts needed for my frame replacement.)

Yup. :( And the thing is, it's just a small landscape trailer with a 1500-2000lb sub compact tractor on it. Nowhere near the max 6500 lb tow capacity. Maybe it's just drive line vibration on start up, but it feels like it struggles to get up to speed. And I have to brake MUCH sooner, as well as backing off the gas sooner. I find myself down shifting more to help hold it back, and of course everyone I talk too seems shocked it still has drums on the back. (And that drums aren't as good as discs for stopping.)

I knew I *might* tow when I got it, which is why I paid extra for the tow package. But it just seems like it's not enough now. Maybe if I ran higher octane consistently it would help. I considered a SC too, but with about $4 grand in recommended repairs from the dealer during the frame inspection, it's not worth it. That would be $8 grand plus tax into a 9 yr old truck. If I could keep it for another 10 years, maybe. But I just don't see that as a possibility.

Does your trailer have electric or surge brakes?
