I had also mentioned a while back about a leaking fuel injector. I still have a haunting feeling that a bad fuel pump is the cause. Hmm. I can only have one vote, and I didn't get to actually perform any of my diagnostic tests? Dang.... Um.... Well I think it is one of the two there.... Since it does happen when it has sat cold for a long time as well, I am going to vote for a bad check valve in the fuel pump.

Really?!?! You can do that? But what if it's super bad like that one dude's, where he said there were melted connectors? You can't fix that, can ya?

You think you can do aftermarket tank if ours is found to be a rustbucket?

This is just how my mind works, I wanna know the very worst we could be looking at, then hopefully we'll be pleasantly surprised, and save time making decisions once we find out how bad whatever it is actually is.

Got it. I DO remember you saying possible leaky injector too Bama - but I'm pinning ya down and making you go on a limb here to commit. Didn't mean to discredit ya when I gave Keakar all the glory on that, it's just that he's the only one (from what I remember) that committed SOLELY to that, and very early on at that. AND he said it with total confidence if I remember right - something about giving his Tacoma to the OP if he was wrong - you guys remember that, don't you? ;)

Got it, Bama's vote is fuel pump - and even specifying how/why the pump is failing, that's one long limb man! Very impressive! :D

C'mon guys, VOTE! Did I mention the cookies are made with all organic ingredients? And can even be custom decorated to the design of your liking? Trust me, these things are freaking delicious. And I'm being serious - big ol' batch delivered to the address of your choice. VOTE!

If its that bad i would buy a used complete assembly from ebay then put the new denso pump in place of the one it came with.
My vote has been fuel pump since this started lol

Thanks Knuckle! Sounds logical, I like it!

Got it. Shit, so that's 3 votes fuel pump - that's gonna be a lot of cookies to make! Damn, those organic ingredients for 3 batches could cost more than the f'ing pump itself! :D You guys deserve this though, not to get all touchy feely, but I can't say it enough - you all have been my sounding board through pure hellish torture for nearly 2 months now, on a subject that I knew basically zero about when this started. Can't thank you enough, would be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more [IMG] by now if it wasn't for my Taco World buddies. Thanks guys.

OK, so that's 3 votes fuel pump (Kigmob, Bama, Knuckle).

Everyone else, VOTE! And start deciding your cookie designs - color choices are red, blue, black, and white. I'm no artist, but I'll try like hell to design anything my Taco buddies request! :)

Wait, Bama, just reread this (the part I bolded)- it DOES NOT happen when sat cold for a long time! Cold starts from sitting overnight are always perfect. 5 min or less sitting always perfect. Only bad when sat ~20-40 min, and IAT is 60+, and the higher IAT is , the longer the crank time. So IAT is ALWAYS low when sits several hours or more, therefore beautiful cold starts every time.

You wanna change your vote? I'll let ya, but just this once, since it could be my own fault for doing a poor job explaining symptoms or something...

I see some campers [IMG]who haven't voted yet..........don't make me start naming names again!!!! YOU know who you are campers! This isn't Dexter K!!! [IMG]

    Gotcha Knuckle![IMG]

By the way, can anyone tell me if it's absolutely most definitely impossible that the spark plug electrode broke into a billion pieces and some are now stuck in EVAP lines and causing the hard starts? I wanna get my vote in too......if it's possible AT ALL in terms of the anatomy under the hood, that's my vote, just cuz it's too freaking tarded to not select. But if anatomy dictates not possible, then my vote is................drumroll please..........

Loose engine ground that controls multiple ECU functions......we had that in 2010 once, and the truck did all sorts of wacky shit.....looked like it was overheating as we drove up a mountain, did this weird lurching, idled low.....plus my understanding is that'd be cheap......and those dudes just ripped our Taco's heart out, and all the crap surrounding it, then put it all back together. Would be easy to imagine some weird little wire being corroded or loose. But we'll see.......

Now if we could just get some organic gas, so we can stop worrying about the crappy ethanol content f'ing up our Tacos! :D I'd pay premium pricing for that!

By the way, here's a random off topic story for ya: last week I went to fill Taco up at Costco. It was like gas wars in there, every line was like 10 cars long and people were being seriously aggressive that were trying to add onto the lines. Finally got a spot in line, sat there about 5 minutes, then watched the fuel truck pull up to start filling the tanks. Thank goodness no one was behind me yet.......backed outta there as fast as I could and went straight to Shell!![IMG]

So true! Been 90% organic for several years now......guess that's why we can only afford HF tools and don't have a garage! :D

So, home grown Oregon boy......ya wouldn't happen to be an expert at dropping a fuel tank/truck bed, would ya? And also have a sudden burning urge to assist with said project? :D

I'm gonna vote for that thingy in the tank that pushes the gas up to the motor.
More specifically, the flappy deal that keeps the gas from coming back when the motor is shut off.

Fuck. That's 4 votes fuel pump. That's a shitload of cookies. Assuming you're referring to the check valve in the pump, Hypox?

I still don't understand how it could be that though guys, cuz then how the hell does it start great when fired up cold? I know it's supposed to receive extra fuel when started cold, but if pump is failing, how can it work extra hard at those times to deliver extra fuel?[IMG]

OK, for those that haven't voted yet, you just lost your chance to call fuel pump or I'll be baking cookies til the day I die![IMG]

By the way, some have said it'd be a total freak if fuel pump wires are charred/burned/melted - but my buddy Matt (granted, he's just a fart around home mechanic, but he usually knows what he's talking about) told me last night that this actually happens quite a lot. Bama said that too. Just for the record, don't mean to start any of this [IMG]. Although it does make the agonizing waiting more entertaining.....:D

Yep I'm with fuel pump. (Just because this is all too familiar with what happened to me and my Taco).

Not that it really matters but my second vote would be leaky injector.

I kind of ruled this out from the start though since you mentioned the mechanic did a bunch of fuel pressure tests. I assumed he did a leak down test, which I think would indicate if an injector is leaking or not.

I should also mention I did clean up one of the grounds on the engine block when I was having this problem. It's located right below where the oil filter is. Mine was pretty nasty, so I cleaned it up really well with a wire brush. Can't say for sure if it helped as I think I did it around the same time I did the fuel pump and FPR, but I would definitely recommend doing this if you haven't already. It's too easy.

Wait, so fuel pump?!??! TOO LATE! I just called off any more bets on that, cuz there's already 4 Mod! C'mon, you knew I was takin votes this morning, you can't call that now! Mod, pick another!

Just read a generic article about the EVAP system/charcoal canister. Now I'm wondering if them blowing air into one of the lines that attaches to the canister is what has caused the fuel smell we've noticed over the weekend and last night - you guys think? I really think I would have noticed that smell if it was happening before - pretty sure the odor is new since they blew into that line on Friday......

Ahh sorry, I'm too far away. If I were closer though! It sure is nice to have fellow taco owners around fur help on these kinds of things though!! I live in a tiny rural town nestled up under crater lake nat park. So I'm a five hour drive up to P-town. My GF goes to OHSU fur school, so I am known to be up there from time to time, but no trips planned any time soon though....

Gotcha Kigmob, thanks. Hoping the mechanic that's got it now will think to check easy stuff like this, as I realized we don't even have the guy's phone number! Might be a good thing though, otherwise he'd never get to actually look at our Taco, cuz he'd be on the phone w/me 24/7, listening to all of my helpful theories and tarded questions......:D

Crap. Thanks anyway! Bet it's beautiful down where you're at. We've thoroughly checked out most every part of Oregon, but have yet to explore down around where you are. Wanting to do Crack in the Ground this summer, you ever been there? I've heard Ashland is cool too. And I've read about tons of awesome waterfall hikes on that road that goes from I5 to Crater Lake, you ever do any of those?
