    Hmm...

I see what you did there.

Was helping a buddy run some new hydraulic hoses on his Cat backhoe this afternoon.

    Shit.

Some of those factory welds were horrible. More than a few of them had filler wire sticking out, pad eyes not fully welded, etc.

ordered this last night. we dont weld alot, mostly just when farm equipment breaks or i wanna build a tree stand. we had an old century stick welder that finally went out a few months ago and my dad said to find a mig welder. everyone he talked to said he needed to go ahead and get a 250 amp, so i looked at several reviews, a local welding shop carries longevity and that was what was recomended to him if he wasnt gonna spend that miller money (by the repair guy that was gonna try and fix the stick welder) but i found this eastwood and all the videos on their smaller units from hobbiest were positive. from what ive read they are like a lincoln clone i think, and as a new customer i got a 10% coupon code and shipping was only $34. I know were not getting a $2500 machine so we done expect it to perform in that way, but like i said we have only had that old stick so this should be a welcomed upgrade hopefully. http://www.eastwood.com/mig-250.html. btw we have been getting by on a friend's 90 amp harbor frieght flux core, luckily all that broke was a hay ring and a piece of angle iron on the cattle trailer gate track ha

Stick welding is so relaxing and fun. Its my personal favorite form of welding behind Tig.

It does take.forever to learn tho cause it really is an art and skill. Not something you can learn over night.

yeah the more i do it the more i may like it. but so far i just hate everything about it. I have probably done like 4hours of it and i don’t think i’m that much better than i was when i first stated. I also will do 3 or so really nice beads and than do 6 really crappy beads with holes and pitting and all that.

If it mean anything, I hate stick welding as well. I'm perfectly happy being a proficient MIG welder.

+a good coat of paint makes many look like a pro welder:)

211i and 252i actually do take different guns.... i've tried  :annoyed: Dont think this miller gun would work on a TA either with the different plug styles, would at the very least need an adapter but thats more work than its worth I would think. The gun for the 211i is relatively cheap in the spoolgun world

Yeah, saw that PM on my phone, I'll try and look at some of my settings. I havent been using it for steel much, its mostly been my dedicated spoolgun machine for a while as I have the 252i, a miller 251, and a Lincoln 255 in my shop too.

We have already done torch cutting and stuff and how to use a grinder and find the info on about what the grinder pad/disk is made for.
yeah i have done mid and liked it a lot! what really helped me decide to do something with welding.

I’m already talking to a few people and looking at opening my own business when i get done. It will be hard but i think i can do it. I have a few people that can help me or teach me how to run all the book/paper work.

I've got a line on a nearly new Cygnus UT setup for the cost of two beers...

Anyone involved in NDT? I have a few questions.

How many guys in here are a welder as their career? I work at Empire Steel MFG Co, in Billings, Montana. Here's a picture of some tanks in our shop. Started working here 5 1/2 months ago for the start of my welding career. Started as a B welder and now have moved up to a A welder. We build anything from small tanks to 40-60,000 gallon tanks for all sorts of fluids, as well as anything that costumers ask for.

I'm pretty sure quite a few of us weld as our career.

I personally am doing flux core welding on poles (title is Seam and Repair). Hate it and currently job hunting but its a paycheck for now

Very nice man! Yeah its an awesome career to be in in my opinion. All we do is MIG at my work as well. I'm debating on moving back to Oregon soon though and joining a Ironworker union. Definitely a lot better pay then the company I'm with now.. Journeyman tops out at $21 p/h I believe..

Welding isn't my primary job, but it's a huge part of building elevators and escalators. If an apprentice has structural welding papers, they are paid journeyman wages anytime they strike an arc. We generally do stick welding because inverter machines are pretty small and light, and space/weight are a big consideration on temporary cars/ running platforms.

Anyone know anything about Thermal Dynamics' torch connectors?

I went to cut some material today and the torch won't light. No pilot arc, panel indicator says it cannot activate the torch.

FWIW, this has happened before. The repair was to replace the torch in order to swap the twist-lock connector. I might have used the torch two or three times since it was replaced so I'm pretty sure it's not the torch. Maybe the female connector?

I guess I'll drag it back to the shop on Monday.
