So ive done some reading here but a little confused in trying to answer a simple question.

is there any benefit to updating just the speakers?

In past cars, there has been a benefit but i read that there could be a poor signal coming out of the entune units. I must say, this is by far the most disappointed i have been with a stock system. In my previous 2 cars, stock systems have been surprisingly loud and clear, and i just dont get that from this 2015 truck, quite disappointing.

Yes, updating the tacoma's speakers is good. Don't go big with them, I'd keep it under 45watts RMS or lower.

I've shared your same problems with the stock systems. Gets the job done, but still very underwhelming.

I changed the head unit in my 2008 and it did a world of difference. Changing the input (which in this case will be your stereo) will make the biggest difference on the front end. If you change just the speakers, you'll still get the same, underwhelming output from the stock stereo.

Now, I've seen some of those newer model stereo systems, and they look way more complicated than what I've worked on in my 2008. If you'd like to keep the stock head unit, I recommend picking up one of those little power-pack amplifiers. They run off the battery, and will amplify the speakers around 45W to 50W RMS. Clarion XC1410 or the Alpine KTP-445U are examples of these little amplifiers. I have no experience with these power-packs, but I know a lot of people use these to get a better sound off their stock head unit.

    Hope this helps.............JWL

try to find speakers with the highest sensitivity. higher sensitivity means less power required to produce sound at a particular level. it will help tremendously when running a low power head unit.

+1 on that. I've been thinking about doing a speaker upgrade as well and doing HU later. The Infinity Reference series and Kappa series have sensitivity in the 91 to 93 db range. I haven't used them myself, but the reviews are mostly positive.

Sounds like its worth a shot for speakers only then. Been out of the audio game for a while, id say 10 years. A lot changes in 10 years. My college car was a piece of crap, but could shake the campus
