Whistling Noise in Crosswinds At Highway Speed

I've also had a problem with my '13 AC, an annoying whistling sound starting at about 35-40 mph. This and and other TW threads suggested bad windshield or hood seals, mirrors, antennas, etc. Some posters have suggested inserting tubing or thin dowel rods in the front hood seal, so I thought I'd try it.

Purchased a 3/16" wooden dowel and cut to length.
Rounded off ends with sandpaper to facilitate easier push through.


Inserted through front hood seal.


Took the Taco out for a test at highway speed and WOW! NO NOISE!
I just love it when an easy and inexpensive fix works.

Pressing on the window makes it stop, so I assume it's somewhere in the door, and not the "easy fix" of the hood seal

 

That sounds like aliens trying to contact you...

 

I get the whistling too but only if I'm going 75+ mph. Slow down.

 

Again there are two different distinct noises.

The grill whistle that sounds like a faint tea kettle.

And the kazoo noise made by most likely the door seals.

 

I heard a similar noise the other day with a strong crosswind coming from about 4 o'clock. It was mildly irritating but went away as soon as the direction changed. I may mention it when I take it in for service but I'm not going to spend hours chasing down a fix.

The kazoo sound is usually the windshield molding/seal not the door seal. You are misleading people who dont know what's going on. If you push hard on the windshield from the inside near the top where the noise is coming from the tone will change if it's the windshield molding/seal. At least it did on mine. This issue has been clearly identified on this and several other threads and Toyota knows all about it but plays dumb like its the first time they have heard of this every time.

 

I get the exact same noise and I had also fogured it came from the mirror

 

Try pushing on the glass hard all allong the top especialy near the mirror towards the drivers side next time it buzzes. The rubber moulding vibrates in the Chanel at a certain wind speed and angle. If the sound changes. You need a new moulding. The mirror could be the problem but you would see the miror vibrating if it was. The kazoo is exactly how the windshield noise sounds. It's very loud too.

 

my windshield has been resealed and the kazoo noise is still present.

 

Did they change the moulding when they resealed it? I had to get it done twice because the moulding was the issue they are suposed to change it but they don't allways do it. See my picture. The new molding is shaped differently.

 

I hear what you are saying and I don't think a lot of us are trying to mislead anyone with the whining sound. Yours may of been the windshield molding but I still think mine is the door seals. The only way it couldn't be the door seal in my case would be if the door seals are so tight that it is causing some type of pressure in the cab and the windshield is then making noise that is sounding like it coming from the driver side mirror. I don't think this is the my case. Like I said earlier, I can make go away and come back by simply hitting the window down about 1mm or less so it is still pretty much closed and in the top track. The whine comes back once I snug it back up. My opinion is the window is ever so slightly making the top frame of the door move outward to cause the sound to start again when it is fully up or I am relieving pressure in the cab which I am not feeling any air when I have the window just barely bumped down. Mine does sound like the many videos where it is coming from about the side mirror height inside the cab when the window is closed fully.
I see only a couple solutions since there isn't a real TSB for brand new Tacoma's yet. Either I can try the slight top door bend by pulling on it while the window is down (never tried it and wonder if works) from inside the door like I have seen in some videos or install some in the groove air deflectors which I think could create that little gap (maybe since I never wanted these or installed them before) that makes my noise come and go. Anyone installed the in groove deflectors and not had the noise again??
My short term fix or maybe I will just live with this fix if it bothering me is to just bump the window down so it is still closed just not snug and I have no noise.

Thought it was the mirrors at first - noticed pushing on the window stopped the 70+ an hour horribly loud noise, had the dealership change the outer window seals (not sure of the proper name) and so far so good

 

No. I have in channel window visors. Drove from BC to Saskatchewan and the crosswinds of the prairies had me ready to burn my truck. My father-in-law pinched the top of the passenger door closed tighter with the tips of his fingers and it would stop the noise. It is the sound of the wind hitting the gap between the door and the cab at the top corner and has nothing to do with glass.

 

I can second this. I too had in channel visors and have had the same issue. Its also not the grill for me. Subbed.

 

I had both the soft whistle noise and the loud screeching noise that's in the YouTube video posted on this stream. I did the 1/4 drain hose in the 3 front and main back hood seals and that cured the whistle noise. Toyota resealed my windshield but that did not correct the screeching noise. Next windy day I'm going to duct tape around the mirrors and the door seals to see if that stops it. I'm suspicious of the mirrors, but don't know for sure yet.

 

Maybe I missed it (so much written on subject), but I never heard of the back hood seal (in addition to the well-known front) fix before.

Same treatment as front, 1/4 hose?

 

I also get this exact noise but from the driver side. It sounds like its coming from the door somewhere and not the windshield. I have also had my windshield replaced twice so I"m guessing its not from that, and I have in channel visors and still get the noise. I don't get mine nearly as bad though, its pretty intermittent and only happens in strong cross winds going 70+mph.

 

I don't think that problem is from the mirror. My '05 Taco has been making it for years. If you press your hand against the passenger side window, the noise stops. When I wash the truck, I use some WD40 to lubricate the seals around the window and apply some to the top edge of the window itself. This helps a lot. But at the right speed (fast) and the right wind direction, that noise always comes back.

 

I had both noises too. Toyota resealed my windshield which wasted 2 hours at the dealership and did not correct either noise.

Based on postings on this site, I corrected the whistling noise by inserting 1/4" tubing in the 3 front and one back hood seals.

The other noise in the video on this stream is the seal on the door between the door and the A-Pillar. It can happen on both sides, but mine has only occurred on the driver's side. I temporarily corrected it with duct tape over the seal just to prove the source. I then put a thin adhesive backed weather strip from Lowe's or Home Depot on the A-Pillar to provide more pressure on the seal to prevent the airflow causing the noise. It's a cheap solution and since I go to Lowe's often it doesn't take any time like leaving your Taco at the dealer in hopes they can get the right cross winds in a test drive and then figure out where it's originating.
