I drive a 2013 v6 Tacoma 4x4 (Baja), I am nearing the 30k mile mark and need everyone's suggestion. Almost all of my miles are from highway or city driving, and my truck is babied to the extreme. The recommended or Toyota guidelines say to do sparkplugs, rear and front diff, possibly transmission fluid, and the normal oil change.

Is all this extra stuff really needed this early?
If I can get away with just an oil change that's what I'm looking to do. I will eventually be able to do the other stuff on my own once it gets a little warmer outside, but I don't want to pay the stealorship to do it for me.

What would you guys suggest as far as synthetic engine oil goes? I live in NW Indiana, so my truck does see a decent range of temperatures.

Sorry for opening another thread with this question, just always gives me piece of mind to have one that I wrote up with my info.

    Thanks everyone!

I switched to synthetic oil at 30k miles. I didn't do my plugs but I pulled them and they looked great. I didn't do tranny, did oil change, didn't flush the diff.

IMO do all the maintenance ONLY if you want to drive the vehicle for many many many many miles. If you're going to trade it in soon don't do them (course that could affect the trade in/seller price).

At least do the oil, plugs, front and rear diff oil, and air filters.

Do not need to touch the tranny yet (unless that is your thing haha).

My plugs looked like crap at 30K and the gaps were way out of spec (but didn't seem to affect performance). Rear diff fluid was black, front didn't look bad at all. I'd say do the rear at the very least.

Switch to synthetic and perform the recommended maintenance when the weather warms. Use the milage as a guideline, not as gospel. To extend the life of your truck, stay away from dealerships.
I recently went to a doctor for a broken ankel. The doctor asked me what medication I was taking. I told him I don't take any medication. He asked me how I managed that at my age. (62) I told him that I stay away from doctors. :D

Suck it up!! What's a little cold weather?? LOL Just kidding....

Engine oil change - has your maintenance light come on yet?? Just because you're at 30k, doesn't necessarily mean you're ready for an oil change yet.
Wait for the light to come on..... It'll blink at 4500 and stay on constant at 5K. When its on constant, its time to change.

As for Spark plugs & diffs...You can wait until warmer weather. Just don't be putting another 10,000 miles on between now and April.

Automatic Transmission doesn't need any maintenance until 100,000 miles (unless you beat the crap out of it on a regular basis, you might want to do it sooner)

I run Mobile 1 synthetic in everything. Engine, diffs, transfer....

We don't know how often he changes his oil (or resets the main. light), so, IMO, he shouldn't rely on the maintenance light. If he has driven 4k miles since the last oil change, time to change the oil.

He never mentioned it, so why I brought it up.

Someone has been resetting it or else it'll be on constant forever until someone resets it. Has he been taking it to the dealer for oil changes?? The dealer has been resetting it.

The point is.... He doesn't necessarily have to do the oil change now IF and only IF someone has been resetting it properly and the light isn't on. If someone doesn't have any clue what the light is for and has been resetting it for no apparent reason....then, you need to worry about 'when' the last oil change was.

I understand what you are saying.

I don't always remember to reset the main. light. I also do my oil more than I need to, around every 3-4k miles. For me, the main. light has no bearing on how old the oil is.

I tend to overmaintain, but I'd do the full driveline and be done with it. The trucks have been reported to be low on fluid from the factory, so it can't hurt to have it done and brought up to the proper level.

I'm coming up on 30K myself and plan on doing the trans. Is it overkill, sure, but it cannot hurt.

I switched to full synthetic motor oil at 5K in my 2006. I did all the 30K service myself and its really not that hard to be honest with you. I understand what your saying about the cold though and wanting to wait until it warms up. I'd say you can go over the 30K but try not to go to far over it and if you do then you will just have to suck it up in the cold weather and do the service.

In reference to the above statement, the dealer was taking care of the regular oil changes and tire rotations that came with the purchase of the vehicle, up to 25k miles. I went ahead and had them change oil almost every 4k miles if not right after. I pulled the numbers for the amsoil 5w30 synthetic, and i'm going to order that along with the rear and front diff oils and trans oil. I figured I mine as well bite the bullet and take care of it now instead of later. While im at it I will switch it all over to synthetics. My truck does not fit in the garage, and its a little to cold to be doing maintenance in the drive way. My goal is to get all the materials ordered and then ill talk to the local Toyota dealer and see how much for just there labor.

Why's everyone doing the transmission oil. 30k service only recommends checking it. Check it and then determine if you need to change it. I choose to stay away from the trans.

So I just got off the phone with the local Toyota service department, and they told me the sparkplugs should be good until around 90k......... needless to say I will not be taking my truck there for anything anymore. They did say that front and rear diff should both be swapped, and transmission is good till 60k. none the less, unless I misread the maintenance book I'm astonished they said the spark plugs were ok until 90k.

Looks like its time for me to learn how to do this maintenance myself.

Technically they should provide spark till 90k :p

This should help you get up to speed on all the goodies:
