This is gonna be funny. I always play around see how far i can get in 2wd. Haha not far. Sure on real roads that are just gravel no worries. Biut get a little more off the beaten path and your toast.

To be fair I don't think you'd have trouble on that road with a 2001 Toyota Echo.

If you have fun out there and don't get stuck, that's what matters.
When you start to tackle tougher terrain, have a friend out there with you to help get back out.

Here is a picture from my camping trip this past weekend. 2wd wouldn't get you more than a few feet in. Nice slippery mud covered in a few feet of water.

There's a reason that PreRunners don't exist here--it's called winter. My truck would have been stuck many times in snow and ice if it wasn't for 4WD.

Just based on the 4 images posted, I've been on rougher roads with our TDi Bug...

I've driven in worse in my 2000 civic hatchback. 2 wheel drive isn't enough. Brother and BIL went offroading last weekend into the forest roads packed with hard snow. My BIL said that his 2003 4runner couldn't drive an inch in 2wd mode. And he has aggressive ATs on it too.

I'm sure the pictures of challenging terrain are coming soon?

But why are you in the 3rd gen forum? Trying to troll in the future? :p

Looks like you had fun. There are lots of BLM roads in the southwest and around vegas that 4x2 is just fine for. Go out and explore.

If you see a little beat-up roadsign by a little used cattle track that says "4x4 required" or you start climbing a road that's getting narrower, rockier, and steeper and you're getting more wheelspin - never be too proud to back up and find a safe place to turn around and return later with a friend and better prepared.

Depends on the road and the conditions.

    Sometimes 4x2 is enough.
    Sometimes 4x4 is enough.
    Sometimes 4x4 locked is enough.
Sometimes 4x4 locked, lifted, with armor is enough.
Sometimes, even a flippin' unimog isn't enough and you're just NOT getting through.

My brother and I were in his 2WD Cherokee out in the Arizona desert (waaaaay back when) hunting, following a current (at the time) ranch map. We learned that if the road was on the ranch map, it was okay. We went through a gate, followed the road, and kept going on when the map stopped showing road.

Long story short, we had to get rescued. By a Wrangler. 4-banger. The whole time we were being hauled up the hill, the Wranger's owner was screaming "and I'm stock, baby!" over and over. Much beer was owed.

A valuable lesson in 4WD was learned that day.

sometimes it is enough. sometimes it isn't... why is this even an issue?

in addition, there's times doing something (especially downhills) is very dangerous in a 4/2.

my 05 with a mechanical limited slip was great. Never got stuck to the point where I couldnt get out by going back and forth. My new 4x with electronic traction, well thats a different story. Had to lock into 4wd once because I parked in a small rut. LOL
