hmm, well im unhappy with the long box, and wanted to switch to the small box and do the suspension right the first time. the offroad rear axle is weaker then? i figured id be saving myself a lot of time and money by going with an offroad model and getting the elocker front. just trying to get all my ducks in a row before i pull that trigger. :)

Yes the factory elocker axle is a weaker axle/ differential and fails easier than the sport models. The elocker is an 8" where the sport model/ sr5 have a 8.4" wich is remarkably stronger than the elocker diff. I in the last year have gon threw 4 of them mixed between bigger rubber and a semi bent axle ive had enough of screwing around with this pos axle and fixing the problem. If i were to do it again i would just go with the sport model and go arb even if it is air, but its the only option i have found. Imho i would not go with the offroad especially a dcsb im having issues in a access cab. Food for thought, do as you will but be warned and im not the only one that has had this issue, the flyingkrawler is on #3, another fellow in bc posted on bct4wd in search of a diff has he sheered his pinion...

Actually both ring gears side by side are the exact same size, 8''. But the non elocker diff (8.4) has more support for the ring gear. The bearing caps are bridged, more webbing on the third and the pinnion bearings are farther apart. Also the 8.4 diff has bigger main bearings if I remember correctly. The elocker third has basically remained unchanged since its arrival in 95 when the first gen tacoma was released.

Thank you Kernel, the pinion bearing is way to small but didnt know most of the rest. Once i found out my diff was weaker it was a toss my hands in the air and yell wtf why a weaker diff in an "offroad"!!!

    Still blows my mind!

yeah it mind boggling why they did it that way. I think the offroad should have come with the 9.5 diff from the 06-current 4.7L v8 tundra. Would have made more sense to me.

Thanks for the words. i just find the initial cost of ARBs a little daunting and well, if im going through the trouble of getting one, might as well get both right? total cost as i wouldnt install it myself makes me shy away towards an offroad model

Initial cost hurts but the elocker front that ghost has is the price of an arb with a arb twin pump compressor and locker manifold kit.

ive seen a couple imported dcsb offroad tacomas on the market for a few grand less than any other 4x4 tacoma the same year just because its an american import. thats what initially caught my interest.

im reconsidering that option now though, thinking maybe a canadian dcsb sport would be a better option.

I personally feel better suggesting that to you, then go arb front and rear. Only reason im getting away with keeping elockers is i have the 9.5 going in instead of the cute 8" lol

Do you think you can fix your axle with a bungee cord and piece of gum until the new one comes in?
