I'm in agreement with others who do not like how the ABS functions on the Tacoma. I have an intersection coming out of my subdivision that always seems to get icy in the winter and if I allow the ABS to kick in, I have no hope stopping in time and I'm sliding through.

However, there is a simple (yet very difficult to execute) solution.

Don't allow ABS to kick in. Don't hammer down and hold the brakes!

I find I can stop substantially quicker and have substantially more traction when I'm on the verge of ABS kicking in, but not allowing it to.

It means that one actually has to lighten up on the brake pressure to stop faster. Again, this is really hard to do when 99% of our other driving habits teach us that the harder you press on the brake pedal the faster you stop.

I have a fairly steep hill by my house and have tested this numerous times. I have substantially more traction by feathering the brakes with the right amount of pressure.

However, if I mash down and engage ABS, it's game over and I'm sliding and have less traction.

    That's just my $0.02!

So…….is the solution to this issue pulling the fuse??? Will there be any "adverse" reactions to doing this?

Obviously driving too fast for conditions ABS isn't meant to slow you down any faster you need to buy new tires this has never happened to me so therefore it has never happened to you .

What are you going to do after you buy a Ford and read about Ford problems on F150 or Superduty forums?

Will it be on to GM or Dodge?

You guys are fools if you think that's the only problem. The ABS in the truck really does extend braking times by a lot. Locking up the tires at his speeds would have been perfect acceptable. I have never once driven a car in the winter that behaves this way with the ABS.

It kicks in too early and reduces braking pressure for too long.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet.... so I'll throw it in...

Think of it this way... It's not necessarily about going straight or even braking distance.... It's about being able to turn and control the vehicle during hard braking. Without ABS, your brakes lock up and you have no ability to turn. With ABS, the system tries to keep your tires rolling so there's at least some sort of ability to turn around obstacles if needed.

I think about offroading situations I've been in - going downhill. I've seen so many people in 4hi on decents, lock up their brakes and they can't steer. They plow downhill and can't keep on the trail. VERSUS going down in 4lo and not using the brakes. Tires continue to roll and you're able to steer where you need to go.

Same idea....when tires are rolling, you have better ability to steer.

I haven't read this whole thread, but it seems that ABS would be better in Ice. Stopping distance should be the same with both ABS and non ABS, but you can't steer when the wheels are locked up.
